Wunderwaffen, German for wonder weapons, were superweapons invented by Nazi Germany in various attempts to turn the tide of World War II. (PROSE: The Crawling Terror)
History[]
World War II[]
During the Blitz, a Wunderwaffe capable of awakening tribal instincts and hatred within young people through a hypersonic signal was dropped on Mayfield Terrace during an air raid. It was intended to prepare for an invasion of England by fermenting internal divisions but it never activated. (AUDIO: Hunters of Earth)
After the failure of the Hartung Project in March 1941, Oskar Steinmann was called to help develop further Wunderwaffen on account of his part in the Project. On 24 December, Christmas Eve, 1942, Generalmajor Steinmann and a teenage Unteroffizier observed the first test of the V1 flying bomb at Peenemünde. The Unteroffizier believed the weapon would be able to defeat Britain but Steinmann, who had read about the future, claimed it had no purpose beyond the psychological. (PROSE: Just War) German rocketry capabilities were far in excess of anything the Allies were capable of (PROSE: Timewyrm: Exodus) and V1 bombs and V2 rockets were fired at British cities beginning in 1944. (PROSE: Illegal Alien) However, the site at Peenemünde was later ravaged by the Royal Air Force (PROSE: Schädengeist's First Love) and the Allies overran the rest of the rocket sites (PROSE: Timewyrm: Exodus) after invading Germany in 1945. In 1944, SS General Hans Kammler led "Project Chronos", the construction of Die Glocke, from plans deciphered from an encoded Wyrrester signal. Hitler believed aliens had sent Germany the plans to help them win the war. The device was constructed but numerous scientists died in the testing phase and Die Glocke was never utilised. It was secretly transported from its test site to Neuschwabenland in Antarctica. (PROSE: The Crawling Terror)
By 11 April 1945, with all these miracle schemes having failed, Doktor Vilhelm Schädengeist thought the Wunderwaffe projects an absurdity, seeing them as nothing more on a drain was valuable resources and Reichmarks which could have been put to something more useful. (PROSE: Schädengeist's First Love) The Third Reich surrendered less than a month later. (PROSE: Just War, AUDIO: Just War)
After the war[]
In July 1963, Mayfield Terrace was taken down, activating the inert German hypersonic Wunderwaffe. In October, the First Doctor and Susan Foreman were able to block the signal using artefacts Colonel Rook had recovered during the Allied invasion of Germany. The Doctor then advised the weapon be found and dismantled before its signal activated again. (AUDIO: Hunters of Earth)
In 2014, Professor Jason Clearfield recovered Die Glocke and attempted to use it to aid the Wyrresters. The Twelfth Doctor and the British Army thwarted their plans and Die Glocke was taken away by Deprartment C19. (PROSE: The Crawling Terror)
