World War Skaro was the first science fiction novel written by Sarah Jane Smith. She published it "a few years on" from her highly-successful 1983 series of article on the criminal organisation COBRA, paving the way for a writing career which would also include the New York Times bestseller The Monster at the end of Space. Although the book was perceived to be mere fantasy, albeit with unusually realistic characters, (PROSE: The Roving Reporter) Sarah Jane had, in fact, as a companion of the Fourth Doctor, experienced the Thousand Year War on Skaro firsthand.
