The Wild West, (PROSE: A History of Humankind) also called the Old West, (COMIC: The Greatest Gamble [+]John Peel, DWM backup comic stories (Marvel Comics, 1981). Page 39.) of North America was very different to how it was depicted in films and other fiction of the 21st century. Life in the frontier towns sprung up as European settlers spread across North America, and life for them was not as violent as was often portrayed. Each town had a sheriff to keep the peace and enforce the law. A similar role was that of the US Marshals, who were appointed at government level by the US Marshals Service.
