Wholeweal was a community of environmental activists in Llanfairfach, Wales, led by Professor Clifford Jones.

Wholeweal was given the derogatory nickname of "the Nut Hutch" by the locals — apparently because its members were believed to eat nuts instead of meat. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Green Death) The members were mainly scientists who were researching new sources of food production.
Thanks to string-pulling by Jo Grant, the United Nations agreed to fund the Wholeweal commune as a research facility. Jones noted excitedly that this could mean "food for all" — as well as new jobs for the Llanfairfach locals who had been left unemployed following the National Coal Board's closure of the local mine.
