Dr. Warren Martyn was an archaeologist, explorer, and friend of Lavinia Smith. In 1983, he and his assistant Dexter Townsend were leading an Egyptian dig following new satellite photography of the deserts. The dig was cursed by funding difficulties, on-site deaths and the removal of certain items retrieved, leading to most of his financial backers withdrawing funding. Lavinia sent her niece Sarah Jane Smith (accompanied by K-9) to the digs for the story. Dr. Martyn soon discovered an underground city of Silurians and Sea Devils. Sarah Jane opened diplomatic relations with them, and Martyn elected to stay and help prepare a way forward for peaceful coexistence and cultural exchange. (DWM: City of Devils)
