Vengeance on Varos was the third episode in the Tales of the TARDIS series, released on BBC iPlayer on 1 November 2023 by the BBC, written by Phil Ford and directed by Joshua M.G. Thomas.

This story consists of two newly recorded scenes bookending the omnibus version of the TV story Vengeance on Varos, and ties in with the events of The Eternal Mystery, covering Peri's life following the events of Mindwarp and The Ultimate Foe.

Synopsis[]

The Doctor and Peri meet to remember their first conflict with Sil on the planet Varos.

Plot[]

The Sixth Doctor is reading a book in the remembered TARDIS when a woman suddenly appears in front of him. The woman turns around to reveal that she is Peri Brown who moves to embrace the Doctor. After talking about how the Doctor has aged and grown a beard, the Doctor goes on to talk about the adventures Peri has been on.

The two then go on to discuss the reasons that they have both appeared in the remembered TARDIS where the Doctor says that the memories of the stories they shared live on and sometimes return to their owners.

As they both sit in their chairs, the Doctor tells Peri that she has always been in the remembered TARDIS due to its ability to remember everything. Peri says that she never forgot the Doctor and used to look up at the stars and wonder which star the TARDIS was moving around while asking herself if she would ever see him again.

They both begin to ponder some of their memories, including some Peri wishes to forget, such as her first encounter with Sil on Varos. After the Doctor tells Peri that good can come from the darkest of places, the memories begin flooding back...

After recounting their adventure on Varos, a feather drops lightly into the Doctor’s hand, which reminds an unsettled Peri of the feathers that had grown all over her during the cell mutation process. She also remarks that when she had eventually gotten back to Earth, she found it had become a lot like Varos. The Doctor remarks that it was events like on Varos that gave Peri the drive to fight evil wherever she found it, leading to her ultimate destiny to become the Warrior Queen.

The Doctor then invites Peri for further travels onboard the remembered TARDIS, to which she agrees, though she requests that she can visit Yrcanos’ memorial once a year to check how things are going on Krontep. The Doctor happily says "it's a deal", and the two of them embark on new adventures.

Worldbuilding[]

  • Peri has had songs written about her as a Warrior Queen, with the Doctor having heard minstrels sing them in the Scorpion Nebula and the outer rings of the Medusa Cascade. According to him, some of them are "very catchy".
  • When Peri travelled to 21st century Earth, she noticed that it "[felt] like Varos".

Notes[]

  • Colin Baker never liked his Doctor's outfit. So it make sense that this is reflected in his older Sixth Doctor, which shows a more subdued but bright suit with a rainbow pocket hanky.
  • Peri is not upset about how her life turned out, despite the fact the Valeyard got her stranded in the 24th Century, leading her to become Yrcanos' wife.
