Cleanup Template Edit

Ok. It is done. At the moment, it says: It needs to be cleaned up in these sections: as I couldn't think of anything better but if you can think of something better, feel free to change it. ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 16:45, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, whoops. Sorry, I thought it was you who left my the message. I don't know why. Anyway, it needs rewording I know but can you think of anything better? ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 16:52, June 18, 2010 (UTC)
The reason I was saying about it was that, for example, on River Song's page, it was in need of a clean-up. But it didn't need it for one section, it needed it in the the whole thing, but most people wouldn't know that the cleanup needed all spoilers removed. If we add this section to the cleanup template, it doesn't always need to be used, but it is there for necessary times when specifics need to be removed such as the spoilers on River's page. I've cleaned her page up since asking for the template to be modified, but I still think it will be useful for the future. The Thirteenth Doctor 17:08, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Community involvement with the italics/quotes issueEdit

I obviously value discussions and consensus decision-making too. That's why I use the fora and talk pages with great frequency. You keep making the point of seeking discussion as if it's something I'm not doing. But is that fair? We're talking about a change that I clearly want to make, that I have the tools to make with relative ease, and about which I actually don't think there is any logical resistance. To me, this is like arguing over whether the sky is blue. And yet . . I've made no substantive moves on the matter in the 18 months the discussion has been open. How much more dedicated do you want me to be to using the fora? Even by our standards, this discussion has been ongoing, unresolved, for a ridiculously long time. Let's face it, if you were on board with this idea, you wouldn't be behaving so cautiously. And reluctance and caution are both fine things. But please don't shade the issue as if I'm trying to do something improper by seeking closure on an 18-month-old discussion. Most of my major actions on this wiki have only been made after at least some period of discussion on the fora or talk pages. CzechOut | 06:46, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

Of course it's a 18-month discussion and not just two spurts of activity. It's significant that no one else has posted in that time. I think it indicates that they don't care, and that they want us to settle the matter. You can't make people interested enough in a topic that they'll post. Some things attract attention; some things don't. You can't force people to use the fora. If you wanna try the canvassing thing, cool. For me, canvassing has produced mixed results in the past, but what the heck. Again, though, let's not make this out to be a question of failing to involve the community. That's wholly unfair. This topic has been out there, and several times at the top of the list of topics at the Panopticon. It's not like this has been buried on your talk page. People have read it, and chosen to ignore it, just like they did the K9 discussion. Arguing the finer points of punctuation isn't gonna set the world on fire, but somebody has to bring it up and take a stand on it. CzechOut | 07:27, June 24, 2010 (UTC)
I'm really glad you've gotten more input at the forum thread, but I do think the precise language you've used to drive people there was a little less than neutral. Instead of saying something bland like, "Could you please come to this forum thread and give your opinion", you went further than I would and said, "I'm not comfortable with . . . " — which kinda suggests that something "fishy" was going on. People will have naturally gone to that page with greater suspicion than was necessary. I'm not angry or anything. I don't think you were actually trying to "load" the discussion with people "on your side". And I absolutely understand what you were trying to say in the full sentence. You were saying that you were uncomfortable with just two people having the discussion, which is a perfectly valid point.
But I do think some people might have focused merely on the fact that you said you were uncomfortable rather than parsing the whole sentence. And as you're viewed as the senior admin who tends to "close" these discussions, such word choice can have a devastating effect upon genuine conversation. It's a bit like one's boss saying, "I'm uncomfortable; aren't you uncomfortable, too?" And that feeling of discomfort could be then applied to the thing being proposed, especially as you are uncomfortable with the proposal. Again, I'm not suggesting intentionality or anything like that, but that's a subliminal vibe that's possible to infer. It's so important to consensus building that people be alerted to a discussion in as neutral a way as possible, as is suggested at the Wikipedia guidelines on canvassing. In the interests of avoiding anything like this in the future, I have therefore brought over a simplified version of {{Please see}} from Wikipedia. CzechOut | 20:25, June 24, 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry that my words upset you. I thought they would reassure you. After all, having the tools to do something, but not doing them, surely shows restraint and responsibility. In this instance in particular, where I really don't understand the community response, I think it shows a demonstrable respect for the community-building process. You seem to start from the position that I'm a loose cannon or something, and that baffles me. Given that you've had other admin around here saying things on talk pages like, "Nah, don't ask anybody, just do it," I'd have thought the amount that I talk about things before doing them a refreshing change. CzechOut | 17:50, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

Formatting the Doctors Edit

Hey. You were part of the discussion above. I was wondering if you could have a look at the discussion as I have given a new reply including an example page, and maybe we could start discussing it again now that we'll have time before the Christmas special. Also, I think it'd be good to get the rest of the community's opinions if you could ask them to join. Thanks. The Thirteenth Doctor 20:53, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

The Time Field Edit

As we Know the Finale has aired but yet nobody has made a decision. So Please Could you move the Time Field to the Time Crack! I am Only asking to change this because in the big bang the doctor says amy is not a ordinary girl because she grew up with a Time CRACK in her wall not time field. so please could you move it? From Liamhenney 18:29, June 29, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, it may have been seven months ago that Liamhenney said that and I agree, Tangerineduel. Good idea, Liamhenney! 90.215.45.50 19:50, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

Help with discussion Edit

Hey, can you please state you view on the discussion I am having in the forums here. Its about the navigation template, and I am would like you views on them, and how we can improve them (ChzechOut's idea) or if we should remove them. Cheers. Mini-mitch 22:19, July 17, 2010 (UTC)

Doctor Who Spoofs Edit

What is the limit really of Doctor Who spoofs? I mean... The Curse of the Fatal Death has an article on this wiki. Lenny Henry also did a spoof on his show, so should that have an article as well. I understand that not all spoofs need an article, a lot of them aren't proper skits, but I think the Lenny Henry one is. It was also released alongside the Curse of the Fatal Death and on the Trial of a Time Lord. So shouldn't it have its own article(s). I can create them in my user namespace first if that's better? The Thirteenth Doctor 13:25, September 25, 2010 (UTC)

Mortimus name changeEdit

Hey there, a number of users have been talking about a name change from Mortimus to The Monk because now Mortimus isnt his most recent name and The Monk is a more recognised name for him. Just thought i'd get an admin's view before changing anything.

Death of the Doctor editing Edit

Sorry to complain but whats the point in not being to edit Death of the Doctor until it's been broadcast. The Vault of Secrets hasn't been broadcast but people can edit that. Why? I'm not complaining about the "admin only" thing, I understand that. Ghastly9090 17:36, October 16, 2010 (UTC)

So it's gonna stay like that until Death of the Doctor has been broadcast? Ghastly9090 14:58, October 17, 2010 (UTC)

Please could you change the editing thing. Perhaps you could do a poll on the home page then that means that everyone gets to infulence what happens to the wiki, not just the admins. Please. The only reason me and I'm sure loads of other people go on this wiki is being able to tell people about Doctor Who. Please consider my request. Ghastly9090 15:16, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, how many non wiki heads like me actully knew about the editing poll thingy? You could put one one the main home page; then people will know and there will be a better result. Ghastly9090 17:45, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Yes. You said it yourself. It is meant to draw people in. A poll would be perfect. People really like doing polls because it makes them think that they have made an impact on what happens on the wiki. They would love it. It would DEFINETLEY draw people in. Consider it. Ghastly9090 15:19, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

OK, polling is not is aparrently not a good idea but then, what is someone comes up with a great idea, an absolutely amazing idea, tell you, and you think "Oh no, I don't like that", how do you know that a vast majority of the wiki could even will like it? How do the admins know that they are making the right decision? People don't find out about it unless they look on your talk page but how many people actully bother to go looking on this talk page and go "Oh I like that idea". I think the whole wiki should have their say in what happens on the wiki. Now that loads of people go on the wiki its not the admins decision, its the peoples decision. You are the clever person, come up with a way to notify and let people know and have a part in decisions. Ghastly9090 16:18, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

Hi, did you see the above message? Ghastly9090 16:45, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Ghastly9090 Edit

Can you please give Ghastly9090 a warning. They've been warned several times about not adding spoilers and future appearances, but have ignored them. Thanks. --The Thirteenth Doctor 15:09, October 17, 2010 (UTC)

SJA wiki Edit

Hey can I post links from The Sarah Jane Adventures Wiki to this Wiki it is just stories Sarah Jane Smith features in. Drwhokid 22:08, October 17, 2010 (UTC)

A few questions Edit

Hi, I need to ask u three things: 1: The ancient civiliation on Mars whould that be considered as Ice Warriors or Osirins? 2. What is this Anti wiki alliance? and 3. Why has Solar Dragon left?

Just curious. Many thanks Son of Icthar 14:02, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Yet another question Edit

Just wondered, how do you delte a whole article. Just wondered how, don't worry I'm not going to delete anything on this wiki. If you could tell me how though, that would be great.Son of Icthar 14:05, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Thank you Edit

Thank you for answering my questions, could you just clarify something for me were the pyramids built by the Ice warriors or the Osirans, I think it's the osarians but my friend says it's the ice warriors. Also who or what was Monaco? I've never heard of it, if you could tell me that would be great. I don't suppose you know where I can see a picture of this 'oasis' or whatever it's called. Many thanks Son of Icthar 10:50, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

UnblockEdit

Please can you update Death Of The Doctor with the synopsis and ading the doctor to the cast list

Merge and categories Edit

Hey, could you merge Osterhagen Project and Osterhagen key. I put the merge template up a while ago and no one has objected. As I said on the key's page it's literally the same information on two different pages, so would just be better to have a section on the key in the project's page.

The second thing is categories. In the Category:History, Archaeology has it's own subcategory. If you go to it, that category is in the history and science categories. It only has the Archaeology page in it, so would it not simply be easier to put the archaeology page directly into the history and science pages? I could understand if there were several articles or even subcategories for archaeology, but there isn't. And the same would apply to others of the same kind of nature. Would you object to me changing these? --The Thirteenth Doctor 11:02, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll have a look around and see, but if there isn't any other, would it be removed, and the same for other categories? Also, Death of the Doctor, one of the categories you added was missing the ) at the end, so it's created a red link. --The Thirteenth Doctor 12:00, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

It may have been three months ago that this happened but I think that merge is a really bad idea. 90.215.45.50 20:44, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Short Story Edit

Hey, when you edited this the other day, I think it messed a little bit of the code up somehow. I was looking at Leap Second and the other short stories, and they all have the same code at the top of the page, and I'm sure it's to do with the template. --The Thirteenth Doctor 11:52, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Creating New Pages with no info Edit

I've noticed something that a lot of people are doing, generally new users or anons. They create new pages, but just have one line or no information at all. This looks bad on the history of the page, and it's better if the article is started with some actual content on it. Is it possible to add something like that to our policies about not creating pages if you haven't filled in basic information about the subject? The Thirteenth Doctor 20:32, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

94.7.224.51 Edit

Could you please leave a message on the above IP's talk page. I've asked them a few times when creating articles to remember and put the episode source beside the information. For some of the pages it's easy to tell where the information comes from, but the user has ignored my asking them to do so, and it's other users who are having to add it in. Thanks. --The Thirteenth Doctor 12:06, October 27, 2010 (UTC)

PandoricaOpens666Edit

You need to have a talk with this user, his edits are consistantly speculative and he refuses to conform to the manual of style. Finally he leaves hostile comments on user's talk pages who remove or correct his edits, such as he is doing on The Thirteenth Doctor now. Revanvolatrelundar 16:37, October 27, 2010 (UTC)

Revanvolatrelundar acts mature and powerful, but considering he thinks I'm called "PandoricaOpens666" as opposed to "ThePandoricaOpens666" I think he's the one that has an issue of "factual inaccuracy"

I do conform to the manual of style mostly and I do try, and if you people who run this site would stop being so ignorant and pointing out the negative things no matter how small they are not noticing the positive contributions like the ones I have done to numerous SJA articles, and making small cases look extreme. Consistant? That's nonsense, and another thing, saying that factual innacuracy is extreme....it's not in most cases.

Oh, and he did have the decency to spell Thr Thirteenth Doctor's name correctly, well that shows what he thinks of me in comparison to him. I am not making personal attacks at the Thirteenth Doctor, and...hostile? Thats nonsense also, I never threatened him or insulted him, like I said you people make a big thing out of petty situations.

The Thirteenth Doctor is actually pretty unkind to users, he bullies them, criticises them for every little thing they do wrong and think's he's correct about everything and is not open to hear new opinions, he also appears very formal and enthusiastic about all the suffering that goes on in this wiki or the Whoniverse, and I was merely stating my opinion.

And to be honest.....This is a wiki about entertainment! You're all treating this like it's some big, legal matter, there is nothing serious going on here, yet you all sit at your computers or laptops acting serious and mature about this, acting like this whole website is some big responbility, and in a way thats very biased and immature.

AdminEdit

What does the word Admin mean to you? In fact what does the word Admin mean entierly?

But are the Admins in charge of this whole website? Or just second-in-command?

Okay, but how come wikipedia dosen't let anybody edit, an this does? Is wikiepida just run by staff and not admins as you said?

Thank you for that information. Rumors have spread suggesting that there will be a flying shark in the 2010 christmas episode, and that there will be glimpse of Amy and Rory Williams's honeymoon but they were having they're honeymoon on the honeymoon world mentioned in TV. Also could anyone create a wiki like about a comic a book, anything? Like would me for instance be able to make my own wiki were people could edit like this one? Who founded Doctor Who wiki?

I never wanted to MAKE a wiki, I was just interested that's all!

Christmas episode what-what-what?Edit

Is there really gonna be a flying shark? Will we have a glimpse of a Amy and Rory's honeymoon? Although it did happen during death of the doctor.

About gothic stories Edit

Hi! Well, yes. The Kasterborous reference cited is where a lot of it is coming from. I must say it's changed since I left that message on the talk page. The thing is, I don't really know where you stand of plaguerism. I know plenty of people who would consider copying a line but changing one or two words to be plaguerism, but others wouldn't. If consider the first point to be accurate, then basically the whole page is plaguerised. If you consider the second, probably one or two sentences that I doubt breach any copyright laws. Help Edit

Hi Tangerineduel. I have just become an admin on The Sarah Jane Adventures Wiki. I think Mini-mitch is a regular user on it as well but it is in really bad shape. There are loads of VITAL pages that need creating and that's where you come in. If I am not mistaken you created this wiki and look at it now; It's number 10 on the "Wiki Charts". Please would you try to help Sarah Jane Adventures Wiki by creating some of these pages and I could help by asking the guy in charge (Mini-mitch I think) to make you and admin. This is not bribary. Please could you help or at least have a look. Thanks so much. Ghastly9090 16:12, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Not quite a merger then - sorry! Edit

Hi sorry about that I was about to add soundtracks Series 5 and specials and I noted that the article page could have been better (as suggested) so I just did it - sorry about that. As I did the original page, and it had been sitting there a while, I didnt think it would matter if I orphaned my original page. Obviously I was wrong - again sorry. I was just those three pages so I promise I wont do it again. Am I forgiven oh great and highly respected one? btw wheres the template for audio music soundtracks with collapsable fields for previous and next - cant seem to find it again. Jane Espenson Edit

Jane is writing three to five episodes, three of them definitely will be written by her. She has revealed the line "I need to talk to you" said by Jack in episode five. She also confirmed on twitter she is writing episode seven in one of her 'writing sprints' @adrievdm @janeespenson

Spoiler alert Edit

Just a friendly advisory that this afternoon what appears to be a fairly major spoiler involving the Doctor in Series 6 has started to make the rounds. Without giving it away (because I'm mad enough at getting spoiled unnecessarily and I don't want to do it to anyone else), it's one of those things that could result in less-responsible IPs and newbies making certain edits to some articles, like that of the Doctor. If you're not aware of the spoiler, just a suggestion you may want to police the articles to make sure premature/prebroadcast/unconfirmed information isn't added. (As I understand it, while the wiki isn't a spoiler-free zone, that applies to material already broadcast and published and not necessarily in relation to an episode that may not air till next June) 68.146.64.9 23:33, December 8, 2010 (UTC)

Can't seem to recreate this page after your deletion of it. Need to do so, as it's the only official name we have for the Christmas episode of Doctor Who Confidential. Not quite sure why it's not working. Can you please check to see if you need to undo some admin-y type thing? Thanks. CzechOut | 22:59, December 25, 2010 (UTC)

TOC movement Edit

I share your concerns about picture placement, and indeed they are ones also conveyed by Skittles the hog. As I explained to him, however, there was no way to test this in some sort of sandbox or hypothetical way, as the effect had to be seen on real pages.

Each page has a different TOC and a different ratio of text to picture. Consequently the "picture placement" issue actually doesn't affect the majority of pages. See, for example, The Reign of Terror, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, Day of the Daleks, The Krotons, The Seeds of Doom, The Ultimate Foe, and, say, Survival. None of these picture displays are negatively impacted by the TOC move. This is because they are adequately written, with a decent-sized lead and synopses. It's also because these pages, by and large, don't try to put the picture immediately under the episode number subhead (though Survival proves you can get away with it, if the lead and synopsis are long enough).

So the best solution to the tiny problem being caused here is simply to fix the defects that are inherent in the pages, anyway. As long as the non-illustrated text extends to the bottom of the infobox, picture placement is unaffected. And, given the new, narrower page widths, that's not asking for all that much text. Also, it makes relatively little design sense for the first picture on a page with an infobox to be sent to the right side. Even without this change, that means that the picture is going to be underneath the major graphical element on the page. On most of these problematic pages, simply "left"ing the first picture snaps everything into place nicely.

Of course, this doesn't address the actual technical problem, which is that the infobox, and not the TOC, is causing this issue. Because it's coded as a simple table now, it's just not playing well with the thumbnail code. As we can see on List of stories recorded at BBC Television Centre, however, it's quite possible for a picture to sit to the immediate left of a template. I'm going to spend some time today, now that I've figured out the actual technical issue, trying to find a new way of coding the box.

To be honest, though, it's not really all that necessary to "fix" the box — because, again, simply editing the few pages that are currently problematic will both resolve the issue and improve the wiki. But I'm still going to poke around a bit, looking for a template solution. CzechOut | 14:02, January 2, 2011 (UTC)

Nope, you didn't ask for a fix to the box. It just bugs me that there are templates here that allow for pictures being placed immediately to the left of the infobox, while others don't. I think I've found the reason though, and will let you know how that progresses. No need for pictures to look unnecessarily screwy while we're busy improving them, if at all possible. I'm not gonna waste too much time on it, cause at the end of the day it's just better to improve the articles and turn the infobox thing into a non-issue.
As for previous/next story on the infobox, I've got a huge problem with that wording on BBC Wales productions, as that's often entirely incorrect. If you're at The Empty Child, the next story is not The Doctor Dances. It's also not particularly correct if you're sitting at Mindwarp. The next story isn't Terror of the Vervoids, cause that's just a chapter in The Trial of a Time Lord. Also, it's just a waste of space. Adding the word "story" adds an extra line of text (on some broswers, and at some font sizes, in some skins) which doesn't actually improve the user's understanding of the label. If you say "previous" and next to it is the linked name of a serial or episode, people understand what it means. Even if you're blind and using a reader, there's no difference between "previous" and "previous story", if the next words you hear are those describe an episode/serial title. A bit of a signup glitch Edit

Short version: Attempting to sign up seems to have gone a bit screwy for me and now I've got an inaccessable account. If you can't deal with this for whatever technical reasons, I'd appreciate a referral up the chain to whomever at Wikia can.

Long version: I was doing a bit of editing, thought to sign up, and after filling out the form got a "username taken" error. Looked at the user page (User:CrazyDreamer) and saw that it listed the user signup date as today. Must be me, right? (Especially given that it's a pretty unique username; pretty much anywhere on the 'net you see that, that's me.) But logging in using the password I selected didn't work, and hitting the "e-mail me a new password" button hasn't resulted in an e-mail at the address I had supplied, so all that must have gotten borked somehow. I don't know if this indicates a bug in the system or a one-off glitch.

Possible resolution and contact info: My current IP User talk page probably isn't the best location, and the talk page for an account I can't log into isn't either, so e-mailing me at my preferred user name (CrazyDreamer) at (@) my personal domain (crazydreams.org) is probably best. Correcting the CrazyDreamer user account's e-mail address to that would allow me to use the password recovery function to log in, solving my problems. If other people have the same problem, of course, then the usual steps for reporting bugs will have to be taken, but if not, it's probably just a one-off.

Wishing you a Happy New Year ......and.... Edit

Just wondered if you thought there was a need for an 'ongoing' stub? I was thinking of those pages which are still ongoing in terms of needing updating regularly so as to remain current, as opposed to the usual stub denoting an article that needs padding out with more content. Just a thought. Hope Christmas was good to you The Librarian 00:22, January 3, 2011 (UTC)

ok perhaps 'stub' was the wrong word I meant 'template' (? I think), something to denote that the pages are only as current as their last addition and so may albeit for a short time - out of date. Things like magazines, listings of comic strips, ongoing lines of merchandise that sort of thing. Hope thats a bit clearer .... New Year and still more muddled thinking - damn!! Experiments and stubs Edit

Just thinking... could we put the stubs on TOP of the page like spoliers ect. so they get more attention wich might get the problem fixed... and the thing about the thing above is using pages to show what they are doing. I'm not against this just thinking a box saying somthing like: This page is being used as part of an experiment Joshoedit 00:26, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Bold Clone Edit

I would like to propose the temporal blocking of User:Bold Clone. For the following reasons: Re-adding delete template after vote against and removal of content (see Howling Halls). I posted warnings on his user page but he promptly deleted them. He also posted a warning on my page claiming that deletion of the template was against policy despite the discussion favouring keeping it. A vote was non-existent at the time. Thanks--Skittles the hog--Talk 17:24, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

He seems to be ignoring the opinions of other users also as he is re-adding the delete template even after a majority vote has decided that it should be removed. Revanvolatrelundar 17:27, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Hey. There was no vote against and removal of content at first. I was trying to follow policy by waiting for a vote.
The warnings were groundless. It was not vandalism. Check the wiki policies to see that I'm right.
Are we supposed to vote or discuss? The impression I got was that we discuss, then vote. A discussion would mean nothing without a vote to confirm it. Thanks for listening to me. --Bold Clone 17:30, January 4, 2011 (UTC)
A majority of 3 votes? Isn't there a minimum amount needed or a minimum time for the vote? --Bold Clone 17:31, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Sorry to use your page as some sort of battleground, if you look at the howling halls history it has all the evidence you need. All the information on their can be justified as you can see it is sourced. Thanks--Skittles the hog--Talk 17:36, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Sigh...wrong. The info cannot be justified, even if it is sourced. All you are saying is "I didn't make up this info." Don't get me wrong, that's good, but you're still saying "the halls might be a prision." That is speculation, and to repeatedly add the info is vandalism. --Bold Clone 17:38, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Discuss this on my page, don't junk up another users.--Skittles the hog--Talk 17:40, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

...You were the one who started this; you were the one who turned this page into a battleground...--Bold Clone 17:44, January 4, 2011 (UTC)
Just more on Bold Clones behaviour, he is currently taking a childish approach, to doing everything "by the book" which is preventing me from properly editing due to his provocative comments and insitence on reverting users edits before consulting the users about why they have been done so. Revanvolatrelundar 19:43, January 4, 2011 (UTC)
You aren't doing any better. You're reverting everything I do without asking me why I did it. Doing it by the book is the way to do it, otherwise I'd be better off to break the rules.
Provocative comments? --Bold Clone 19:47, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

I agree, Bold Clone seems to have arrived on this wiki and decided that he is "the law". As you can see by this page, he cannot accept that he may be at fault. Sorry to press the issue.--Skittles the hog--Talk 19:45, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Sigh...I have decided to follow the law. It's not really my problem if you won't. I just try to do my job. I can't be at fault if I am following the law. Sorry to have these editors continually bother you, Tangerineduel. --Bold Clone 19:49, January 4, 2011 (UTC)
Examples of this are the message that has just been posted now, it is asking for an answer that is obviously not needed and therefore stopping users from getting on with useful edits. Revanvolatrelundar 19:51, January 4, 2011 (UTC)
I need it. I don't really know what you consider provocative. I am trying to do my job here, which includes adding proper info (including IB, which you are preventing), and deleting worthless pages, which I am also prevented from doing so. --Bold Clone 19:53, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Professerbillybob Edit

Professerbillybob needs blocking also as he is constantly removing content from the eleventh doctor page. Revanvolatrelundar 17:31, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

It's more widespread now; he does need to be banned if he doesn't stop. (He is vandalizing.) --Bold Clone 17:36, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Utopia Edit

I don't think I have the powers to do this, but, according to naming conventions, the following should happen:

  1. Utopia needs to move to Utopia
  2. Utopia (Utopia) needs to move to Utopia
  3. Utopia (Utopia) needs to then be deleted.
  4. Utopia (short story) and Utopia (TV story) need to stay where they are.

Not quite sure why Ghelæ deliberately edited away from the naming conventions, but there we are. Obviously, I could do point #1, but I think point #2 is where things start to go beyond me, because Utopia already exists as a pre-edited page. If I'm wrong, and I can do all that, let me know and I'll gladly take care of it. Otherwise, thanks for any help you can give. :) CzechOut | 23:23, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Ah, but there's the rub. According to Help:Moving pages only admins "have the additional option on pages moves of disabling the automatic redirect". And indeed I just did a move and looked in vain for anything like a "disable redirect" button. So I think I did need your help at some point on that road, and thank you for giving it. CzechOut | 13:20, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

Bold Clone Edit

Sorry to bother you again but still Bold Clone is being distruptive on the wikia, reverting users edits and refusing to listen to why they are being reverted in the first place. Please i implore you, sort out this problem, i speak for myself Skittles and Mini Mitch as he is preventing all of us from moving on to new edits. Revanvolatrelundar 20:01, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, what he's doing does not fall foul of any specific rule on the wiki. I've just spent a few minutes looking, and we don't have any real policies on edit warring. In particular, we have nothing remotely like Wikipedia's very helpful 3 reversion rule, which would've curbed the craziness at the Howling Halls a while ago. It's kind of ironic, though. The Howling Halls have become a real prison for some of our editors now. This would be the ideal time to submit such a policy change to the forum. I'm sure it would pass without difficulty. CzechOut | 15:13, January 6, 2011 (UTC)
I agree it would be a good time to update the wikias rules on blocking and revertion.
An example would be: once a users edit is reverted and a reason has been provided, then the topic must be discussed and voted for on the talk page instead of a big revertion war. Those who do not follow this could then face blocking after a warning from an admin. Revanvolatrelundar 15:23, January 6, 2011 (UTC)
Agreed; there needs to be a modification to the blocking/revertion rules. Perhaps something like "anyone who gets involved in an edit war gets banned for a minimum of a day", simply to cool thing down and let others initiate disscussion? The reason why I suggest this is that if you engage in an edit war, you aren't really any better than the 'vandal' you are fighting. However, I believe that the definition of 'vandal' should also be improved. After all, if you are removing ambiguous or contraversial info, then aren't you doing the wiki a favor? That said, I'd like to point out that all I was doing was removing vague and contraversial info. --Bold Clone 18:17, January 7, 2011 (UTC)

Changes to MediaWiki:LicensesEdit

Hey, it'd be really helpful if the following changes could be made to the licensing dropdown. For your cut-and-paste convenience, I include the whole of the code here.

The main changes here are

  • to italicize some things
  • to un-capitalize other things
  • to remove the DWIA "license" from active consideration. There's a difference between sourcing someone and providing the information as to its legal provenance. This is not a "license"; it's just sourcing a website that has no more right to the image than we do. Plus, his day is done; he was great in the 1990s, but now that we've got a more developed BBC website and a whole range of DVD releases, he's got nothing that can't be gotten from an official source. Even his publicity stills are better licensed with promotional than DWIA. In fact, as he is not the originator of any image on his site, all of his images can be better licensed. The site may have been very useful in 2005 and 2006, when we were struggling to found the wiki, but at this point, I don't think we want to encourage any new additions from that rather low-quality image site.
  • to create a comics section, and to add in idwcover and comicbookcover
  • to add the simple PD template to the last section
  • adding general clarity to the public domain wording (NASA images are not universally in public domain; wikipedia PD template needed stronger wording saying it's only public domain images from wikipedia, not wikipedia images in general.)

A slight change back to new decorEdit

I like the new Doctor Who Wiki decor and all that but could you please bring back the sidebar? It makes using the wiki a whole lot better and easier. From the now well known 90.215.45.50 21:53, January 20, 2011 (UTC).

VandalismEdit

Please protect template:delete with full protection. There's no need for it ever to be edited. An anon user came through today and blanked it, which obviously had the effect of removing the delete template from a lot of pages. CzechOut | 16:14, January 17, 2011 (UTC)

Well, I say "a lot", but obviously I just mean "a few" and am employing hyperbole for semantic effect. CzechOut | 16:18, January 17, 2011 (UTC)

Removing "added by" from under picturesEdit

Could we please remove the "added by" line from under pictures? It's unnecessary, and in some situations, as with the <randomimage> command, simply displays in the weirdest places. I don't really see a need for a discussion, since it's not something any of us actively wanted; it was just forced on us by wikia. Plus, depending on the page on which the pic is located, it nominally violates our perspective policy by introducing the out-of-universe name of an editor to a page. It does require a tiny bit of CSS editing to disable, but the procedure is explained fairly simply here at community. Here's an example of one of the possibile outcomes when used with <randomimage>. Note how the name of the contributor simply becomes a part of the caption. In other instances, it'll throw the "Added by" line to the left of the page, quite apart from the photo itself. It's just a wacky nuisance. CzechOut | 20:28, January 18, 2011 (UTC)

Grammar guideEdit

I think this is a marvelous idea. I'd have some thoughts on the actual wording you have now, as well as other things that might be included, but, as a concept, it's damn well needed. I know it can feel condescending, but here's why it's not:

The manual of style isn't actually that much of a manual of style. It's just a few guidelines thrown together. A true manual of style is every bit as detailed as you seem to be going with your effort. Newspaper manuals of style will have passages about correct use of contractions and possessives, just as you have now. Moreover, because we're "English speakers separated by a common language", we need something that specifically sets down what is correct for us and what is not. I just answered a thing on a talk page the other day — I think it was Talk:Mr Smith — about why there's no period in "Mr". And, to be honest with you, I know that, early on in my editing here, I've redirected articles to "St." something, away from the "British proper" "St" something.

So I say let's continue on with this effort, though it may be slightly premature to release it to a live page just yet. CzechOut | 07:33, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

A small change backEdit

Thanks . . . and an italic request Edit

Thanks for all your help recently. :) Can I prevail upon you do one more small change? Could you please add the following to MediaWiki:Wikia.css?

/* Fix for rewrite title */
#title-meta i { font-style: italic !important; }

It'll make it possible to have italic page titles, though the use of template:Title, as at A New Hope, and Great Expectations. Changeover should then be possible to largely accomplish through the bot stamping template:Title onto each story page on the wiki. Thanks :) CzechOut | 07:33, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

Oh, and if you're wondering what all the other templates are in category:italic title templates, well, they're delightful fun and they totally work in a beautifully complex way — but only in Monobook. Damned Wikia skin turns the titles into <i>The Brain of Morbius</i>, but doesn't parse the HTML. This other .css change, though, is in current operation in the Wikia and Monobook skins at Wookieepedia, so all should be well here. CzechOut | 07:33, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

Getting rid of "read more" thingieEdit

Because that "read more" thing at the top right of articles can sometimes overflow into the edit history button (if category names are especially long), you might want to disable it. This can be done by adding the following to MediaWiki:Wikia.css:

.RelatedPagesModule {display: none;}

Delete tempEdit

Well, weird things are gonna happen if ya put it under an infobox. What happens there is that two big templates are competing to be in the same space, and one of them has to "lose". And the one that loses is "delete", because it's just a loose collection of div statements, rather than the proper table of an infobox.

The question really is, why would ya put the delete template under an infobox? It's meant to be the first thing on the page – or at least before any infoboxen/article text. And it's not "meant" to be that way just for coding reasons; it should be hittin' ya in the face no matter how big your browser window is. It should be saying to the reader, "Hey, there's a problem with this article; do something about it." Burying it under an infobox simply isn't a placement I ever expected, which is why the usage instructions say "place the following at the top of the offending article".

Even so, I have added a "clear:both" to the delete template so that "delete" retains its integrity no matter where it's placed on the page. That "clear:both" is a visual bomb, though, and will really frak with the page design if you put the template in the middle of the article. No worries. It got me to discover and delete a lot of weird empty spaces at the bottom of the template that I'd never noticed before. Idea (Likely to be shot down, But still an idea) Edit

I Was just on phineas and ferb Wiki and ther main page has this box thingy that is fill of up coming and recent releases just thought it would clean up the main page a bit. Also a few days ago i accidently clicked on the link to the French Wiki (This wiki Not the other one) and there back ground picture is more Doctor Who-y then ours :( Joshoedit 08:33, January 23, 2011 (UTC)

P&F wiki is a fabulously well-crafted wikia, for what it's worth. However, it's a much smaller fictional universe, so the slider thing works for them. We have a slider like that, but the thing is, it only takes four images and they must be at a very precise and peculiar size. So what four images would we choose to represent the totality of what we cover, and who are we going to put on "slider image duty"? Check out the development notes for more info :)   16:33, January 23, 2011 (UTC)
IS there a way to fiddle with the code to allow more things. Also if it has 4 we could use it Instead of the Logos. Cuse there 4 boxes Four Shows that our wiki covers Joshoedit 18:58, January 23, 2011 (UTC)

CSSEdit

We need to add this to the very top of MediaWiki:Wikia.css:

/*LEAVE THIS IMPORT ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE*/
@import url("http://tardis.wikia.com/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Common.css&usemsgcache=yes&ctype=text/css&smaxage=86400&action=raw&maxage=86400");

Not that we have that much in common.css at the moment, but this fix makes good on the promise at the top of wikia.css that "CSS placed here will be applied to all skins." According to this thread at community, wikia.css doesn't actually load common.css at all, unless you force it. This fix, I've noticed, is present in most of the "tech savvy" wikia wikis now.

Also, I've made you an admin at the Tardis Test Wiki so that we can have a safe place to test CSS while we're learning it. And it'll be useful to check superficial (i.e. colour/backgound) changes. I kinda dig the colour scheme that's there now.  <span style="color:#b7b7ff; cursor:help" title="Don't worry." data-rte-attribs=" style=color:#b7b7ff; cursor:help title=Don't worry.">czech<span style="color:#dbd8ff" title="I'm a force for good." data-rte-attribs=" style=color:#dbd8ff title=I'm a force for good.">out 16:33, January 23, 2011 (UTC)

Hey, I just looked at TV:''The End of Time'' article and it says on there in the template that The Master "redeems himself"- the thing is, he doesn't redeem himself, he's an evil Time Lord, he didn't do anything redeeming, he was getting revenge and decided to save the Doctors life, this isn't a major change for him or major life event, he didn't technically redeem himself, you can't just go from evil to good.

Thanks-

Spring Clean Edit

I Think this wiki needs a spring clean to....

  • Change Links that direct to the wrong place ( Eg. Some Charictor pages for the Pandorica Opens link to the Painting not the TV Story)
  • Settle on a home page design (every day this week it has a new look)
  • updateing pages
  • MORE PICTURES
  • Change rules about Delete/merge, Protection and vandalisum

Also we could add

  • Those Discrimination boxes that EVERY other wiki uses Joshoedit 04:37, January 24, 2011 (UTC)
They are boxes around the same shape of the delete and are in the same place but say fog Eg.
This is series 6 od DW if you are looking for the original see here (link to season 6)
So discrimination pages in boxes. i was just thinking about the Proms pages can i remove the delete /merge becuase they have been up there for months and change the program page to the orchestras that proformed as the programs are on the 2008/2010 pages Joshoedit 20:21, January 24, 2011 (UTC)

PagesEdit

Recently, there has been some edit war over the pages: Howling Halls and Rassilon's Final Solution, now myself and Bone Cold have had an edit war over them in the past day or so, and I have tried to compromise, and told him to wait till a decision has been reached on the talk page. However, he is not listening. He seems to think that the sentence at the bottom of the Howling Halls page is fanon, and keeps removing them, whereas myself, and a couple of other Users revert the edits. He continues to claim they are fanon, and refuses to listen to what anyone says on the talk page (and removed an unregistered User's suggest of just leaving it(You can check the history on that)) and will not settle for the compromise that CzechOut has suggested. Can I ask for this page to be fully-protected till a time when a decision and compromise is reached?

The second page, as I said is Rassilon's Final Solution. I have not been part of the discussion on this, but I have read it, and again Bone Cold makes decisions, regardless of what other User have suggested and said. He keeps on changing the page to 'The Final Solution', without waiting for other User of post their views and reply to his comments and I suggested to him that he asked other Users to voice their opinion, by leaving messages on their talk page. He recently changed it to The Final Solution, and I have reverted this, changing it back to what it originally was, until such times as a decision is reached. May I also asked that this page is fully-protected, or at least make it only possible for an admin to move it, until a decision is reached? I am only asking, as he seems unable to compromise, and I am getting really tried having an edit war with him, which I shall fully accept the consequences of. Bone Cold, was also told of these consequences, which he has ignored. Thank you, and sorry to bother you with this matter. Mini-mitch 18:32, January 25, 2011 (UTC)

Amperstands in titlesEdit

Don't know if you've noticed a minor tech flaw that's cropped up in wikia.css (or, the wikia skin, if you prefer). Doug86 and I have both recently created pages that include an amperstand in the title, but it won't "take". Instead, in the normal page view, it replaces the amperstand with the code for an amperstand. So I went to community. You may wish to check out current progress on solution at w:c:community:forum:Amperstands in page titles. The basic upshot, though, is that a fix is on its way tomorrow.

Possible same person-two usernamesEdit

I think I am 194.81.55.193 aswell as 90.215.45.50, because at school I logged on as myself on a computer and I went into this wiki and it said I was 194.81.55.193 and it said I was blocked and it wouldn't let me edit, but I checked 194.81.55.193's contributions and I don't remember putting Sesame Street 40th anniversary 9 and 10 into Frogger666's page. I don't even know Frogger666.I don't remember editing Charon or Clement McDonald either. 90.215.45.50 20:39, January 25, 2011 (UTC)

O...K...That's fine, I think. Fair enough. Still odd though. Thanks. 90.215.45.50 21:42, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Audio visuals Edit

Hey, i was just looking at the Doctor (Party Animals) page and it doesn't seem to include the Audio Visuals appearances in the infobox yet the BBV ones are there. Are they a special case? (although like BBV they are also fan made) as a passage on the article states:

"During the course of the AudioVisuals story Planet of Lies, the Daleks succeed in destroying Gallifrey. When this version of the Doctor meets the Seventh Doctor, he obliquely hints at this"

This could be seen as bringing those stories into "alternate timeline" status similar to what the Tomorrow Windows did to the Shalka Doctor et al.

I just thought that i would run it by you before doing anything. Revanvolatrelundar 21:32, January 27, 2011 (UTC)

An admin questionEdit

Is there a "Leader of the Admins" or something like that? 90.215.45.50 21:44, January 27, 2011 (UTC)

Right fair enough, thought it was worth a mention as it seems a bit of a grey area with the BBV audios including him being a continuation of the Audio Visual plays. Revanvolatrelundar 13:17, January 28, 2011 (UTC)

Change to MediaWiki:Wikia.js Edit

Need to add these few lines to the above .js file:

importScript('MediaWiki:Common.js');
importScript('MediaWiki:Functions.js');

$(document).ready(function()
{
// Restores normal upload form since the popup one ignores source and license policy. Adapted from http://es.pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Wikia.js via [[starwars:MediaWiki:Wikia.js]].
	$('a.wikia-button.upphotos').unbind('click',UploadPhotos.showDialog);
});

This solves a problem reported by The Librarian, in which he was able to upload pictures from the sidebar "Add a photo" button without ever seeing a licensing dropdown. This forces the full display of the normal view of Special:Upload.
czechout@fandom

Heh, just noticed we don't even have a Wikia.js page yet, so just create it with the above code, please. Oh, and the two import commands at the top won't really do much now, but they're important for later development.

Request Edit

Hey Tangerineduel, ive been thinking recently about how work ive been putting into the wikia and have been wondering whether I could be considered in beccoming an admin. I'm certainly dedicated to the wikia and put lots of time into it and i'm willing to put alot more work into the wikia if I was an admin. Would you consider me to become an admin? --Revan\Talk 13:36, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

I think of all my creations the War King article is one of my proudest achievements (and expensive Perfect Timing 2 set me back quite a bit). Although not my creation, i have placed vast amounts of information into the Eighth Doctor article and have now almost read and listened to all of his stories to try and fill the gaps that existed in the page. I have also added to some of the less... popular or open spin offs such as Iris Wildthyme and Faction Paradox and also the Short Trips stories, which used to be basic skeleton articles before I got my head down and added to them. The End, Osskah and Museum Peace are some of the best examples of this.

On my understanding of Doctor Who i can only detail what i have read, listened to etc.

  • All 8th Doctor comics and audios
  • 30+ EDA books
  • First Frontier and the Dying Days from the NA's and The Dark Path from MA's
  • Around 10 PDA's
  • All 5th Doctor comics
  • Listened to all Faction Paradox audios and read most of the Book of the War (a killer that one)
  • Up to Death and the Daleks in BFBS series and they are next on my list for listening
  • Most of the monthly BFA releases
  • Most classic Who, listened to soundtracks of most missing episodes
  • And of course all new Who, Torchwood and Sarah Jane TV episodes

Theres probably more to list but i'd rather not list them all.

I think it is up to you to determine how trustworthy i am but as you know i revert vandalism often and try to prevent vandals from doing further damage with formal warnings of procedure. My interaction with other users is fair and i account for other user's views of things and not just my own.

If there is anything else that i may have missed please let me know and i will try to answer for you. --Revan\Talk 15:45, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

It is because at the moment i have been editing on topics that are very popular on the wikia and there is usually a large number of editors trying to get their say at the same time. This means that by the time I have got something down there is an edit conflict which means i have to type up again, hence the rushed typing and errors. --Revan\Talk 15:40, February 1, 2011 (UTC)

May I also take this moment to request future "adminship"?--Skittles the hog--Talk 21:42, February 1, 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps it would be better if Skittles and Revan put their requests here, and Solar Dragon and Mini-Mitch's out of date requests be either archived or deleted. --The Thirteenth Doctor 23:58, February 1, 2011 (UTC)

The consequence of CSS manipulation Edit

As you know, one of my enduring editing interests here is in the overall layout of the site. I think our first communication over three years ago was about template design, not content. Unlike you, I've been dying to look at ways to change the CSS and java so that we actually have a coherent visual look. So I've been using w:c:tardistest as a way to redesign the site from the ground up. I'm about 50% done, but there's enough there to see the basic direction.

It is becoming apparent to me that in order to implement the changes there over here, I'm going to need admin powers here. I'm not asking for them because I want them or I think I'm due them. I'm saying that this business of me funneling you bits of code isn't going to be an efficient workflow pattern — should the changes be viewed favorably by the community. I'm not done with the complete makeover, but you can certainly see it taking shape if you look in w:c:tardistest:category:What's changed. So I'd like to know before I put too much more work into the code redesign whether it's at all likely I can get admin powers relatively quickly in order to actually implement the changes. Cause if not, there's not a whole lot of point to the exercise. I see on the request for adminship pages at least one name that's been languishing there for six months, and, I hope you'll understand, I don't want to be tinkering around for that long. I want the site updated before series 6 starts so that we can attract and retain new editors.

Now, you might be thinking, "Why can't I just cut and paste the .css and .js files once CzechOut is through with them?" And you could. But the maintenance of it — since you've not significantly played with CSS — will require me to have admin powers. Also, it is an inevitable rule of code design that you can test it as much as you want, but you can't 100% predict how it will behave on the actual site. We've seen this in the recent MediaWiki 1.16.1 release, and how Wikia admins were requesting that people gave input on it from their own, individual wikis. It's extremely laborious to recreate everything onto TardisTest, as you'll see by the half-finished front page, and the numerous red-links in something like w:c:tardistest:Susan (Dalek movies). Thus, there are inevitably going to be things that need slight tweaking once it goes live here. Just look at the revision histories on the most CSS-active wikis, like Wookieepedia and MemAlpha, and you'll see they didn't get things working "out of the box". So you're going to need a "Tech Admin", as it were. It's not a luxury, really, or something I'm asking for in order to "big up" my status here. You need someone who's going to take charge of the site design around here.

Of course, I'm not saying TardisTest is finished, or that you'll necessarily like everything about it. But I do think you'll have to say, "Wow, that's got a lot of cool design elements that would look great." At the very least, you're going to say, "Wow, if he can change that, could he also change it to look like this?" In other words, I think the work at TardisTest will make you consider changes you never really thought possible. And I can't really make any of that happen in an efficient manner without having the powers to administer the code. Honestly, I'm quite happy being a normal user, but I can't figure out a way to remain a normal user and yet effect broad, positive changes to the site design.

So what do you think? Is there any way to fast track admin status for me? A side benefit, of course, would be that all those helpful deletions CzechBot has been recommending and that you've been laboriously deleting on the nod would happen automatically. Less work for you, surely. Have you ever rejected a deletion request from the bot?
czechout@fandom

Thanks very much for your confidence in me. I'll try not to let ya down :) Oh, did you wanna give my lil robot buddy admin status too so that his deletions can go straight to the trash?
For my first trick, I'll be finishing the install on italic titles, which turned out to be more than just one line in MediaWiki:Wikia.css.
czechout@fandom
Hmmm, that's an interesting question. I suppose it technically could do mass rollbacks — somehow, I don't claim to have ever looked at that — so it might be useful in a massive, multi-page bot attack. Though, we've never had one of those yet. I guess I'd say enable rollback too, just in case.

Finister2 Edit

This user has been warned about 4 times now about making and adding silly categorys to articles. He has done this once again, calling the Draconian article an eleventh Doctor comic story. SS Pentallian Edit

So. 3.5 years ago (yeah, you're really not gonna remember this), you moved SS Pentallian to S.S. Pentallian. It's the only use of full stops with the SS precursor anywhere on the site. Can you remember why you'd have done that? Is the name of the ship visible on the model or set somewhere in 42? The article itself consistently spells it without punctuation.

Thank you very much. --Revan\Talk 15:10, February 4, 2011 (UTC)

{{title}} issuesEdit

{{title}} is actually entirely free-form. You can retitle the page to anything. So Dalek (story) was just a typo. Thanks for catching it. I suppose I could mess with it, if I thought about it long enough, to make sure it's not quite so free-form. But I dunno.
czechout@fandom

No, actually, it wouldn't make sense to make it less free-form. Please see the documentation at {{title}} for a more complete explanation.

Christmas cheer Edit

Happy holidays!

As this fiftieth anniversary year comes to a close, we here at Tardis just want to thank you for being a part of our community — even if you haven't edited here in a while. If you have edited with us this year, then thanks for all your hard work.

This year has seen an impressive amount of growth. We've added about 11,000 pages this year, which is frankly incredible for a wiki this big. November was predictably one of the busiest months we've ever had: over 500 unique editors pitched in. It was the highest number of editors in wiki history for a year in which only one programme in the DWU was active. And our viewing stats have been through the roof. We've averaged well over 2 million page views each week for the last two months, with some weeks seeing over 4 million views!

We've received an unprecedented level of support from Wikia Staff, resulting in all sorts of new goodies and productive new relationships. And we've recently decided to lift almost every block we've ever made so as to allow most everyone a second chance to be part of our community.

2014 promises to build on this year's foundations, especially since we've got a full, unbroken series coming up — something that hasn't happened since 2011. We hope you'll stick with us — or return to the Tardis — so that you can be a part of the fun!
