The Time Hotel was a hotel that offered its guests the opportunity to travel to any year of Earth's history. Guests could travel from the hotel, which was located in London around the year 4202, via special doorways which led to different points in time and different places on Earth. It is because of this that hotels in general have an extra door, which nobody really knows where it leads to.
History[]
In 4202, the Time Hotel offered visits to the O.K. Corral, Pompeii, Giza, Mesopotamia, the Stone Age, pre-colonial Mexico, the signing of the Magna Carta, Pisa, the Orient Express, Manchester in 1941, Mount Everest base camp in 1953, and trips on Nostalgia Tours buses. They even offered specials, such as Presidential Assassinations, and "Christmas, Everywhere At Once". (TV: Joy to the World)
Around the same time, Villengard attempted to use the hotel's Time Doors as a means to test a star seed, with a briefcase holding the star seed being first latched onto a guest, before it would jump higher up the staff ranks, until it reached the manager, which would give it access to the top floors and far back as possible. The hosts were then killed and their consciousness were uploaded into the Star Seed's interface. The briefcase was eaten by a dinosaur, and travelled from host to host for millions of years, until it reached Bethlehem, 0001 BC, but had grown beyond its programming by then, and with assistance by the Doctor and Joy Almondo, was able to take off into the sky, saving the Earth. Anita later used the house key to pull the Doctor into the Time Hotel from Conrad's World. Due to the destruction of Earth in 2025, the Time Hotel was "in spasm" and being abandoned by the residents. At the Doctor's request, Anita kept a door open from the Time Hotel into UNIT Tower, exposing UNIT to real time and restoring their memories. It also restored Rose Noble who had been erased by the creation of Conrad's World. Once reality was restored to normal, Anita returned to the Time Hotel, giving the Doctor a message that the Boss said hello. Features[]
The Time Hotel does consider time causality, blocking out rooms if it is occupied by people native to the time period the doors lead to, and since the rooms were physically linked, no changes to the timeline or paradoxes could happen, with the exception of bootstrap paradoxes. For example, there was one instance where the Fifteenth Doctor was able to travel from a room in 2025 to one in 2024 and encountered an earlier version of himself. The Doctor also speculates that it's because of this hotel that there was no room at the Inn for Mary and Joseph, during the Nativity. (TV: Joy to the World)
The main column of the hotel went up several floors, with each higher floor going further back into Earth's history.
The Time Hotel also featured a clothes store called Mr. Benn's Any Era Clothes, as well as a bar called "DeTamble's". The Hotel's kitchens were also thirty minutes into the future, so guests could have their meal arrive as soon as it's been ordered, to save time, although some of their meals are said to be microwaved.
Among the staff were not only people from 4202, but those through different time periods, who were readily accepted by those who worked there, such as Melnak, a Silurian from pre-human history, who went on to become the manager of the hotel, and Anita Benn, who was an employee of the Sandringham Hotel in London during the 2020s, and was hired at the Doctor's recommendation. Using the house key, staff could open doors to anywhere in time and space, including to alternate timelines. (TV: The Reality War [+]Russell T Davies, Doctor Who series 15 (BBC One and Disney+, 2025).)
