The True Saviour of the Universe was the final story in The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield box set Ruler of the Universe.

Publisher's summary[]

Bernice finds that time has run out for the Doctor and the universe. Is this really the end of everything? Help is on hand from an unlikely quarter.

Plot[]

The Doctor is arrested and the Master tells Benny that he is going to help save him. The Doctor tells the Parliament of the Universe that he has solved the equations of the Apocalypse Clock but, were he to activate it, the resulting release of energy could be catastrophic. The Mother Superior plays a recording of the Doctor's therapy session in which he criticised Parliament.

The Master takes Benny to a tea shop and denies being involved in taking the Doctor down. They confront the hooded android asks Councillor Mogran what it would take to make him vote against the Doctor, but the android shoots at them and accidentally sets off the fire alarm and flees at Benny's suggestion. She gives Leonard a message for the Doctor and waits for him to meet her, but he fails to show up on time and the Master invites her to dinner.

The hooded android asks the Mother Superior how she intends to vote. It gives her the instructions of the True Saviour of the Universe.

Benny picks the Master's pocket and finds a list of councillors with names crossed off, a piece of evidence which he claims was placed there by the android. She goes to tell the Doctor what she has found, but he does not answer the door to her. The next day, the Doctor presents the Apocalypse Clock and speculates that the burst of energy might be designed to bring back its original owners. The Master is willing to risk it, however, and volunteers to work with the Doctor and use the equations.

The android visits Benny and asks her if she would vote against the Doctor if the True Saviour promised to get her back to her own universe. Parliament deliberates and appoints the Master as President of the Universe, stripping the Doctor of his position. The Master uses the equations and admits that the Doctor was right; the release of energy revives the Great Old Ones who created the Clock, whom he plans on bending to his will. The Doctor materialises in his stationery cupboard, having downsized from the TARDIS, and saves Benny. The Great Old Ones turn against the Master and suddenly vanish. The Mother Superior tells him that they will pretend that he defeated the Great Old Ones and that he will be forced to serve as Ruler of the Universe.

The Doctor apologises to Benny for leaving her in the dark and tells her that he knew of the Master's plans. He ensured that the Master would be made Ruler and stole the release of energy to bring Benny back to her universe. He suggests that they go and have some fun.
