- There are three portraits of Professor Travers in existence: the one that Quantel possesses, one hanging in the National Portrait Gallery, and a third that may have been painted by Andy Warhol.
- Anne recalls the film The Portrait Of Dorian Gray, released in 1945.
- Hare quotes the 'Clunk Click Every Trip' advert that was aired a few years prior to the setting of this story.
- David Russell is the owner of the circus, given to using an exaggerated Italian accent to entice customers. He remembers his father - the previous circus owner - dying a few years previously. It's implied that his father is Lew Russell (Rossini), the man murdered by the Master early in Terror Of The Autons.

- Anne sees someone at the exhibition who closely resembles, and presumably actually is, Andy Warhol.
- Quantel's name invokes the Quantal Paintbox, a computer graphics workstation used by the BBC.
- 'Look upon my works' is a line often invoked by the antagonists in this story. It's a quote from Ozymandias, a poem by Byron, and obliquely refers to the invading aliens who are known as Mighty.
- Anne acknowledges that the Mighty are named because it sounds good rather than scientific accuracy, a reference to the Silurians of Doctor Who.
- Bill mentions that he could barely get through a month without a new alien invasion, in reference to the turnaround of stories in the Pertwee era of Doctor Who.
