The Shard was a London skyscraper used by the Great Intelligence as their base by 2013. (TV: The Bells of Saint John [+]Steven Moffat, Doctor Who series 7 (BBC One, 2013)., PROSE: Twenty-First-Century London [+]Steve Cole, Doctor Who Atlas (Puffin Books and BBC Children's Books, 2021). Page 28.) It was located in Southwark.[nb 1]

History[]

The Shard was built between the mid-2000s and the early 2010s. (TV: Aliens of London [+]Russell T Davies, Doctor Who series 1 (BBC One, 2005)., TV: The Bells of Saint John [+]Steven Moffat, Doctor Who series 7 (BBC One, 2013).)

By 2013, Rosemary Kizlet and her group used it as their headquarters. A Spoonhead hacked into by the Eleventh Doctor drove an anti-gravity motorbike up its side. Once UNIT took control of the Shard, the Great Intelligence ordered Kizlet to erase the memories of the organisation, returning them to their "factory settings". (TV: The Bells of Saint John [+]Steven Moffat, Doctor Who series 7 (BBC One, 2013).)

When the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald arrived in London during the Hyperion invasion of 2015, the Doctor proved to Clara that they were in her own time by pointing out the Gherkin and the Shard. (COMIC: The Hyperion Empire [+]Robbie Morrison, Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor (Titan Comics, 2015).)

Around the mid-2010s, whilst Clara hung outside the doors of the TARDIS in the skies above London when searching for the Trap Street, she was near the Shard, Tower Bridge, and the City of London. (TV: Face the Raven [+]Sarah Dollard, Doctor Who series 9 (BBC One, 2015).)

The A Charitable Earth headquarters were located near the Shard by the late 2010s. (WC: The Promise [+]Pete McTighe, Doctor Who: The Collection mini-episodes (YouTube, 2019).)

Some of the upper floors of the Shard were set on fire as a result of the Giggle. (TV: The Giggle [+]Russell T Davies, Doctor Who 2023 specials (BBC One and Disney+, 2023).)

Notes[]

  1. The map in the The Lie of the Land shows Southwark Crown Court to be on the south embankment of the River Thames, directly beside HMS Belfast. When a birds-eye view of the same area of London is shown later in the same episode, the Shard can be seen between HMS Belfast and Southwark Bridge, definitively placing it in Southwark.
