Plot[]

Olive Hawthorne and her younger twin sister Poppy are being brought up together in the village of Devil's End. Olive finds life boring and craves adventure, often roaming the woods and sketching pictures of nature, far removed from Poppy who prefers to stay at home reading or baking with their mother. The Hawthornes were reunited with their father when he was discharged from the ongoing war due to a severe injury that had caused his left hand to be paralysed, and as such the war effort seemed a life-time away from the relatively peaceful village, however, Olive still regularly finds herself plagued with nightmares of demons and monsters invading Devil's End and has become envious of her sister Poppy's ability to sleep soundlessly.

One night, Olive heads to bed and notices her sister Poppy's amulet by her bedside table and decides to wear it to sleep. That night Olive is awoken by loud noises and discovers a blinding light coming from the nearby stables. She is unable to rouse her sleeping sister and so investigates the disturbance alone. Inside the stables Olive finds a Gypsy woman who recognises her. The woman presents Olive with a leather-bound book, a grimoire and introduces herself as her great-aunt, Lobelia.
