The Greatest Dalek Competition of All Time! was a competition printed in TV Century 21 focusing heavily, as the name suggests, around the Daleks.

Overview[]

The competition was started in TV21 28 where the rules and prizes were outlined. Two photographs from the recently-released film Dr. Who and the Daleks were printed on the page. One was slightly different in ten ways (not including defects in paper and the like) with readers being asked to identify the mistakes. They were instructed to draw a neat ring in ink around what they thought to be ten mistakes and then cut it out along with a coupon and send it to the stated address. In case of tie-breaks, they were also told to complete the sentence "If I met a Dalek in the street I would...", with the three entrants who supplied the "most original completion of the sentence" receiving the top prize.

Also featured in TV21 28 was a partially in-universe albeit thoroughly fourth wall-breaking picture of one of the film's Daleks wishing any prospective participants in the competition good luck.

The closing date was 10 September 1965, with winners being notified by 10 October. It was originally announced that the results would be featured in TV21 40 but due to "such a large response" to the competition the judging took longer than anticipated. The names of the winners were finally printed in TV21 41. A caption noted that, as well as the aforementioned rules, age and neatness was taken into consideration by the judges in their decision-making.

In TV21 53, photographs were printed of the three top winners accepting their prize, a full-size Dalek, with each being presented by a well-known celebrity. Terrence Worrel (or Worrall as spelled in TV21 41) was given his at A.B.C. Northenden by Alderman Leslie Lever MP, Keith Stark received his from Heinz Burt at the Majestic Cinema in South Woodford, while the Applejacks presented Anthony Barber with his at the Palace Cinema in Erdington.

Prizes[]

Dalek original TV21 28

The original photograph

The competition promised there were "over 450 Dalek prizes to be won" and a photograph of Roberta Tovey, who portrayed Susan in Dr. Who and the Daleks, with many of the prizes accompanied the explanation of the competition. The top prize for the three winners was a full-size operational Dalek each which had actually been used in the film. The first five runners-up each received a Dalek Playsuit manufactured by Berwick Toy Co. Ltd.. Each suit consisted of a red plastic dome with visor and shoulder supports, a red plastic skirt, a realistic sucker arm and a toy gun. It retailed at 66/6d.

The next eighteen runners-up each received a Dalek Cuttamastic Set manufactured by Bell (Toys and Games) Ltd. which retailed at 30/-. The set enabled its owners to make their own Dalek and included a cutting tool working off a 4.5 volt battery, two sheets of polystyrene and base board, paints, a brush, and two extra cutting wires and adhesive. The fifteen next best entries received a Dr. Who Projector Set which was manufactured by Chad Valley Co. Ltd. and had a retail price of 29/6d. TV21 explained that the battery-operated projector could throw a picture up to five feet away and that the set contained sixteen exciting full colour strips of film featuring Dr. Who and the Daleks.

They were also available through Woolworths stores. The Daleks measured at 6.5 inches high and 4 inches in diameter at the base. They also featured a noise device, flashing light and mysterious action powered by two 11 batteries. The next nine best entries each received a pair of Dalek slippers in sizes 7 to 12 manufactured exclusively by Furness Footwear Ltd.. They were made in hard-wearing red needlecord with Dalek motifs flocked on the slippers and with a sponge rubber sole. The next twelve runners-up each received a copy of Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks, written by David Whitaker and published by Frederick Muller.

The next twenty-four winners each received a SELCOL Dalek nursery toy. Retailing at 5/11d, they were "beautifully molded" in unbreakable polythene and realistically painted. The fifty next best entries each received a box of Dalek soap. At a price of 5/11d, the soap was made by the Northamptonshire (Town and County) Association for the Blind for Scorpion Toys Ltd., with each box containing three large soap Daleks.

The twelve next best entries each received a box of Contrast chocolates manufactured by Cadbury Brothers Ltd.. On sale in all sweet shops at a price of 8/3d, every box contained one pound of chocolate. The next fifty winners after that each received the "Dalek record", Who's Who, sang by Roberta Tovey and featuring Malcolm Lockyer and his orchestra.
