The Gloaming was the third and final story in the audio anthology Deadly Strangers, produced by Big Finish Productions. It was written by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle and featured Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, India Fisher as Charlotte Pollard and Jaye Griffiths as Lady Audacity Montague.

Publisher's summary[]

The Doctor, Charley and Audacity arrive on Gloaming, a luxury sleep clinic in orbit around a dead world. Gloaming is filled with wealthy Sleepers, dreaming through the dark ages of their world in suspended animation.

But something is growing here, creeping into minds and poisoning dreams. Something the Doctor fought long ago...

Worldbuilding[]

  • Meryl was a herbalist on Gillen-7. She uses her brews, such as Repose and Calm, to put victims to sleep, preparing them for conquest by the Mara.
  • Newborn manifestations of the Mara die if they are left without a host. Charley compares the one which had possessed her to a cross between a snake and a firework.
  • Even synthetic minds, such as that of Franz, are ripe for domination by the Mara.

Notes[]

  • In the original conception for The Dalby Spook (an audio story featuring Gef the Talking Mongoose), the Mara was intended to serve as the villain — a psionic, nightmare adversary reflecting the natural enmity between mongooses and snakes. However, at that time, Big Finish was unable to secure the rights to the Mara, and an original creature was created in its place.
  • By the time the script for The Gloaming was developed, the legal situation had changed and the rights to the Mara became available. On the suggestion of Matt Fitton, the plot — originally focused on sleep paralysis and its associated nightmares — was reworked to incorporate the Mara. (BFX: The Gloaming)
