The Gift was an invisible and transferable weapon of psychic power, used by Caleera in the hopes of exacerbating the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and destroying Earth. It could be transferred between people with consent and left the previous holder aged, also leaving behind a connection which made them follow the Gift.
It was given by Caleera to Sam Sonora in the autumn of 1905 in the High Sierra. He used it to create money but, after a month, found it to be a curse, leading him to transfer it to gambler Pepé Gonzalez. In April 1906, Gonzalez transferred it to Charles Virgil McLean, who had money troubles with Aldo Deluca. He inadvertently amplified the earthquake before the Eighth Doctor was able to get him into his TARDIS and accept the Gift before transferring it into his TARDIS to provide power. (AUDIO: The Gift)
