The Emperor's Spy was a TV Comic story featuring the Fourth Doctor and Sarah-Jane Smith.

Summary[]

In 19th century England, the Fourth Doctor helps the Admiralty perfect a submarine for use against Napoleon, and runs afoul of a French spy.

Plot[]

to be added

Characters[]

Worldbuilding[]

  • The Doctor can control his oxygen need due to his Time Lord metabolism, but he "can't hold [his] breath for ever".
  • Sarah has to pretend to be a man called "Young Smithson" due to a woman in trousers not being an understandable concept in the 19th century.

Notes[]

This serial saw the return of artist John Canning to the TV Comic Dr Who strip; he had previously illustrated latter strips featuring the First Doctor, all of the weekly adventures of the Second Doctor and the first year of the Third Doctor’s Earth-bound adventures. When the strip transferred to Countdown in 1971, Canning did not move with it.

John Canning would continue to illustrate the Dr Who strip (and later adapt strips originally illustrated by Gerry Haylock) until Polystyle Publications chose not to renew their rights to the series.
