Redirection is one of the basic tools of wiki creation. How and why to do it is described below. However, there are a couple of rules about redirects that should be observed on this wiki:

  1. Avoid creating redirects for plural forms of nouns that end in -s or -es. Such redirects are unnecessary as standard wiki markup already provides for them.
    Use [[Dalek]]s, NOT [[Daleks]].
  2. Some redirects are created purely for ease of searching, and should not ever be employed in the body of an article's text. For instance, we retain Love and Monsters, even though the proper title is Love & Monsters. This is because many people will not be familiar with the typographic nuances of Doctor Who episode titles. However, these redirects to incorrectly-spelled titles should not be seen within articles. Therefore, instances of Love and Monsters should actively be changed to Love & Monsters.
  3. Though there is a legitimate need to occasionally make redirects for "misspelled" names, such cases should be limited and well-considered. Redirects should never be created solely for the purpose of allowing or forgiving bad spelling. "Misspelled redirects" for other than the following reasons should probably not be made.
    1. Redirects from American spellings are specifically required by our spelling policy. Americans, who make up a large portion of our readership, must be able to search the wiki using correct American spelling.
    2. Titles which contain abbreviated honourifics should have a title without a period, but a redirect with one. Thus The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve is the article title, but a redirect is allowed at The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve.
  4. Don't redirect to a redirect. This creates a double-redirect, which means that a reader will suddenly find themselves on a page that points to another one. The point of redirects is always to transport a reader to a real content page — not to a redirect page.
