Name[]

Where does the name 'Paternoster Gang' come from? Is it mentioned in a citable source? Or it is just a fan name? MM/Want to talk? 13:05, June 13, 2013 (UTC)

It's from The Great Detective. Doug86 13:35, June 13, 2013 (UTC)

The infobox image is taken from the scene when the Doctor kiss River and it seems like he's kissing the air, from TV: The Name of the Doctor, and the second one is taken from the final moments of TV: A Good Man Goes to War.

Paternoster Row[]

They are said to live on Paternoster Row in The Great Detective:

I refer, of course, to Madame Vastra, the lizard woman of Paternoster Row and her extraordinary adventures [...] a fourth member of the Paternoster Gang...

So I sourced the gang's namesake on the page. However, it is popular belief that the specific address is 13 Paternoster Row. Even though "popular belief" means nothing here, I have a feeling the rumour has a narrative source. Quickly looking through their stories, I have not been able to see a number or address anywhere. Of course, I may have missed it, but I think it more likely that the number originated from a novel. Devil in the Smoke, perhaps?

Companion status[]

i would consider all three of these characters; Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax as companions of both the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor.

when we first meet them, all three characters are said to have had adventures with the Doctor prior to his recruitment for the battle of Demons Run. then, they went on to appear alongside him in The Snowmen, The Crimson Horror and The Name of the Doctor - acting as companions in each story. especially Strax in the Snowmen (who has a role similar to Nardole in Series 10) and Jenny in the Crimson Horror.

then they appeared as companions to the Twelfth in Deep Breath and the novel Silhouette, and in The Doctor Falls Vastra and Jenny are remembered by the Doctor in a montage of his companions.

they resided in the companion categories for both Doctors for eight years and were only just recently removed, i think it is time to evaluate them and put them into the multi-story section of both the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor's companion templates. DiSoRiEnTeD1

The wiki has a pretty lax view on what it considers a companion, so I doubt a strong argument is needed to add the companion category to their pages, only that somewhere, someone in the universe considers them a companion, so they're a companion. To me, that makes Category:Companions of the Doctor pretty useless, but that's the way it is.
In saying that, Strax is definitely a companion, thanks to COMIC: Time Gentlemen, Please!, and Love Thy Neighbor, but imo there is a distinction between recurring characters and companions. Danochy 13:44, May 27, 2020 (UTC)
there is definitely a distinction between recurring characters and companions. and these three are the latter. DiSoRiEnTeD1

This thread holds clarity for how companions are defined here. Snivy The coolest Pokemon ever 13:58, May 27, 2020 (UTC)
