Many Johns

In the process of filling in this page, I discovered there are lots and lots of Johns who've been involved with the show. No surprise, it's a very common name. I added the most notable (John Barrowman and John Cleese weren't on it!), but rather more there are. I don't know if there's some sort of importance cutoff, so I thought I'd list what I found, if others want to work on this. I broke into sections, to make more manageable. Split the page

A quick Wikipedia search shows that Jon, Jonny and Jonathan and Johnathon are completely different from John and Johnny. Jonathan (Yonatan) is Hebrew, while John comes from Hebrew via Latin (Yohannan). They only sound similar because they both originate from YHWH/Yahweh, and there's several names beginning with J or Y that do that. -- Tybort (talk page) 23:51, October 15, 2013 (UTC)

Good catch. It's much overlooked, but there's a huge difference between Jonathan and John. I don't know about Latin, but Jonathan comes from Yonatan (יונתן) as you said, while John comes from Yehonatan (יהונתן). They both have the same basic root (best translation would be God gave). Fun fact: they actually started out as the same name, and Yehonatan was only ever shortened to Yonatan to avoid writing יה (YH).

The point is, though, the names are very much separate today, after getting twisted by multiple languages over time. I agree, this should be split into John and Jonathan, with alternates like Jon redirecting to Jonathan. I don't think John has any shortenings, it being only one syllable.

I am also all for splitting for the most pragmatic reasons: this page is already insanely long. However close etymologically the names might be, if it prevents readers from finding the page they need, we should split them. Given how many real "John"s there are, I would like to split the page and would be happy to do it myself. Amorkuz ☎ 08:48, March 3, 2017 (UTC)

If links to similar names are given in the lead, I support this. When it gets this long, disambiguation (not disarm iguanodon) pages are most useful when their bounds are precise.

Yes, all the disambig pages for people that are currently on it must be linked to at the top. So far I've discovered that "you may" template would only hold two items and used two such template when more links were relevant. Is there a more elegant solution?

Okay, so I would say the pages we need are "John"/"Johnny"/"Johns" stay on this one, "Jon" gets a separate page, "Johnathan/Johnathon" gets a third page. If this is acceptable, let me know and I'll do it. Amorkuz ☎ 15:01, March 3, 2017 (UTC)
