According to one account, the First Doctor came across a new Type 53 TARDIS as he was preparing on leaving Gallifrey.

In this account of how the Doctor came to decide to leave Gallifrey, the Type 53 was one of the latest models of TARDIS created by the Time Lords.

The Type 53 was sitting on a construction palette with its features and specifications immaculately laid out. However, the Doctor dismissed the TARDIS as "new-fangled" and "soulless."

Nearby was a Type 40 TARDIS, which the Doctor took that as his TARDIS. (PROSE: Lungbarrow)
