Super Sonic was the tenth feature and sixteenth release exclusively published in Doctor Who The Official Annual 2024 on 7 September 2023 by Penguin Group[1] and written by Paul Lang.
The feature detailed the main sonic screwdrivers seen in the television series, ignoring any designs from other media.
Summary[]
As they never carry a weapon, the Doctor instead carries a sonic screwdriver. The "multipurpose marvel" aids the Doctor when they need to get out of a "tricky spot" and their brainpower isn't enough. A sonic screwdriver can scan, take diagnostics, unlock doors, disable weapons, and unscrew screws, but it does not work on wood.
- The Second Doctor's sonic screwdriver is a basic model that resembled a pen.
- The Third, Fourth, and Fifth Doctor's sonic screwdriver has a "flashy silver design" with yellow stripes. The head resembles an electric toothbrush, but shouldn't be used as such as it would vibrate teeth out of a person's head.
- The Eighth Doctor's sonic screwdriver was a similar model to the Fifth Doctor's, albeit with a glowing red light at the end; it took the Doctor "a few hundred years" to replace his previous sonic, which had been destroyed.
- The Ninth and Tenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver had an "organic" coral design which matched the contemporary TARDIS. The Doctor used this model a lot given it was "supercharged".
- The Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor's sonic screwdriver was created by the TARDIS. It was able to be controlled by the Doctor's thoughts.
- The Twelfth Doctor's second model was used by the Doctor after he tried "wearable tech". Now, the sonic is capable of "impressive light modes and movements".
- The Thirteenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver was built after she was stranded on Earth with no access to the TARDIS, by forging Sheffield steel and soldering and gluing "old tech" on.
- The Fourteenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver is the latest model, albeit with some "familiar elements" to previous models. It has wide area dispersal petals, function access controls, frequency and intensity dials, a resonator cage, an activation button, a central sonic cluster, and the primary sonic emitter.
There are also other sonic devices used by other people, which include the Twelfth Doctor's sonic sunglasses, which he used after he got bored of his screwdriver; Sarah Jane Smith's sonic lipstick, created by the Doctor; and the Master's laser screwdriver, which, unlike the Doctor's screwdriver, can be used as a weapon.
