On 24 October 1975, almost every working-age woman in Iceland went on strike to protest for wages equal to men's. The country ground to a halt, and not just because there were thousands marching in the streets. Many men were disgruntled by the strike, some because of a shortage of sausages, one of the few foods they could cook themselves, some because they were unable to care for their children alone, and some out of a misogyny so venomous, it led them to harass marchers.
