- The novel is topped and tailed by a fairy story about a monster stalking a child and receiving an act of kindness.
- After the prologue, the action continues with Ruby's first sighting of prehistoric Earth, with her conversation with the Doctor on entering the TARDIS being presented later as a flashback.
- The Doctor is said to have had a chat with the Bogeyman after it is left in the airlock but decided it's better off away from the babies.
- The Doctor and Ruby discuss what will happen to the babies when they reach their new home and whether they'll start aging normally or not.
- The Doctor realises Ruby wants to see Carla after she talks about seeing her mother at Christmas.
