Soul was a member of the Council of Eight, a group of crystalline humanoids created to fill the gap left after the Time Lords were destroyed in the War in Heaven. Each member of the Council resembled one of the Doctor's first eight incarnations; Soul resembled the First Doctor. After defeating the Council and destroying their Time Station, the Eighth Doctor helped Soul to escape by donating some of his life force and memories to him via his hand. Soul escaped with Zezanne and the star-killer in the Jonah, piloting it to a junkyard in London, 1963. He suffered from amnesia, but believed that he was called "the Doctor", and Zezanne seemed to remember that he was her grandfather. (PROSE: Sometime Never...)

Behind the scenes[]

  • Since the publication of The Ancestor Cell, there had been some disagreement among authors regarding whether Gallifrey had merely been destroyed or had been completely erased from history. Following the latter understanding, Sometime Never... provides a new origin for the Doctor in the post-War universe, a reality where Gallifrey and the Time Lords had never existed. The ending implies that Soul becomes the First Doctor, Zezanne becomes Susan Foreman, the Jonah becomes the TARDIS, and the star-killer becomes the Hand of Omega.[1]
