Scientist Shan was a member of the Kaled Scientific Elite towards the end of the Thousand Year War between the Kaleds and the Thals on Skaro.
She was a member of the Military Youth from the age of eight and the daughter of Colonel Krakor, a senior member of the Military Elite who was reported as being killed in battle on the same day that Shan was executed. (AUDIO: Corruption)
She worked under Coordinator Davros. She wrote a paper suggesting the Kaled race would need to be re-engineered to survive a post-war Skaro, which she called "the Dalek Solution". (AUDIO: Davros) By other accounts, the name "Dalek" was coined by Davros himself from other inspirations. (AUDIO: Guilt, PROSE: The History of the Daleks, Dalek Combat Training Manual)
Shan supported Davros's experiments at first but came to be horrified by the lack of morality and objected to them. Davros had her arrested and executed as a traitor. The same happened to her lover Councillor Valron. (AUDIO: Davros, Corruption)
Legacy[]
Although she never lived to see it, Shan's proposed 'Dalek Solution' idea (AUDIO: Davros) ultimately led to Davros' creation of the Daleks and the genocide of the Kaled race. (TV: Genesis of the Daleks)
Davros would occasionally become haunted by his role in Shan's death, but he dismissed his feelings as "simple chemical responses" which drove him to become the man he was. When Lorraine Baynes, who had formally admired Davros, learnt how he had had Shan unjustly killed just to further his own ambitions and position, she was horrified and came to realise what a monster Davros really was. (AUDIO: Davros)
Personality[]
Shan was an altruistic soul who was dedicated to helping others, She was shocked on learning food tablets were made from fellow Kaleds. (AUDIO: Davros) Indeed, she showed righteous horror at the slaughter of some Thals, felt sorry for how the war was ruining life, how the Military Youth was being brutal to children, and attempted to convince Davros that they should make peace. (AUDIO: Corruption)
Shan was also capable of great courage as was shown when she stood up to Davros when he shouted at her for her relationship with Valoran — she was not even intimidated by his anger, and was outraged he would invent accusations to justify his motives. (AUDIO: Davros, Corruption) She also, defiantly, told a drunk Fenn to let her go of her when he tried to 'have a bit of fun', and calmly accepted Valoran's flirting. (AUDIO: Corruption)
Shan showed a grand sense of humour; laughing when Davros failed to capture a rodent (AUDIO: Davros) and also laughing on Calcula's hysterics over some rodents they collected. (AUDIO: Corruption)
Shan was so intelligent that she would've been the head of the Scientific Elite instead of Davros if it weren't for Davros's betrayal. (AUDIO: Davros)
