At the time of their encounter with the Doctor, their King was Harold Godwinson. Monasteries were considered a place of healing by the Saxons. They were the enemies of the Vikings, and of William the Conqueror. In 1066, despite the Monk's interference, they were defeated by William the Conqueror in the Battle of Hastings on October 13th.
