Russell was a soldier in the Boer War. He was abducted by the War Lords, who failed to hypnotise him into participating in their simulated version of the war. He fought against them as a member of the resistance. Like all the surviving victims of the War Lords, he was returned home by the Time Lords (DW: The War Games).
