Roses was a Brief Encounter short story published in Doctor Who Magazine 214. It revealed the true name of the Doctor's granddaughter after she had used the alias "Susan Foreman" to blend in with Earth.

Summary[]

Somewhere in space, the First Doctor tends the roses in his garden while Steven rests in the TARDIS. But the Doctor's plans for a spot of relaxing gardening are short-lived, as a sinister black spinning obelisk suddenly appears in the sky.

Notes[]

  • The events of this story take place after the television story The Daleks' Master Plan, as well as during those of the television story The Five Doctors.
  • The novelisation of The Five Doctors describes the Doctor at this time as being "a Doctor nearing the end of his first incarnation" (quote, page 10).
  • Susan's name in High Gallifreyan was Arkytior, which means "rose". This means that the first companions of both the 1963 and 2005 versions of the series were named "Rose".
