Rosaline was a character in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.
In an alternative version of the play conceived to "make dark tragedie light", Rosaline "found love" with Paris, who was thought dead and had previously pursued the affections of Juliet Capulet. Paris' survival was revealed by the Doctor in Act V Scene III when he and Rosaline emerged from the TARDIS together. Paris explained that he "no longer wish[ed]" Juliet was his because he had fallen in love with Rosaline and the two joined hands. (PROSE: The True and Most Excellent Comedie of Romeo and Juliet)
