Colonel Rook was a military officer in the Second World War and a teacher at Coal Hill School in 1963.

Biography[]

Rook fought in Germany in 1945.

In 1963, after his colleague noticed strange technological activity at the same time as some thefts, Rook monitored Coal Hill School. His nephew Cedric Chivers informed him of the student Susan Foreman, who had an unusual knowledge of science and appeared to read minds. Rook also noticed that the Doctor and Susan had no documentation on them, and believed them to be not of Earth. In October, Rook tricked the Doctor into coming to a warehouse to help Britain fight in a war by placing an advertisement for Magpie Electricals in the newspaper. He also told the Doctor he intended Susan to help in Britain's ESP experiments. When Susan and Cedric arrived after being chased by gangs chanting "aliens out", the Doctor deduced they were being influenced by a hypersonic weapon transmitted over radio waves that used radio waves to make young people hate and attack anyone who was different to them, including the Doctor and Susan. The Doctor devised a means of using Susan's radio and other pieces in the warehouse to transmit a blocking signal that negated the effect of the weapon. Rook helped the Doctor by handing him a map that showed when the satellite Telstar would be in range to redirect the Doctor's signal, and gave him Coal Hill's coordinates. The Doctor succeeded, and told Rook to inform his masters to destroy the weapon. After his life was saved, Rook decided against coercing the Doctor and Susan to fight in the war, and told them that their "secret" would be safe. (AUDIO: Hunters of Earth)
