The Rhineland was a region in western Europe along the Rhine. After World War I, Germany lost the Rhineland under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. In the run-up to World War II, Adolf Hitler ordered the reoccupation of the Rhineland in defiance of the treaty. This was of great concern to Winston Churchill, who felt the reoccupation of the Rhineland posed further threats of Nazi conquet to Czechoslovakia, Poland and, given time, the rest of Europe.
