Piperine was the active ingredient in pepper. It was often used as an insecticide. The Tenth Doctor used this property of pepper in an attempt to uncover the identity of a Vespiform by lacing the soup in Eddison Manor with pepper. (TV: The Unicorn and the Wasp)
