A pickaxe, sometimes simply referred to as an axe, (TV: Fear Her [+]Matthew Graham, Doctor Who series 2 (BBC One, 2006).) was a hand tool with a head comprised of a counterbalanced spike and chisel, perpendicular to the handle. It was used to break apart hard ground or rock.
