Pangloss was the galaxy ruled by the Friars of Pangloss, who controlled the whole of Pangloss by sheer force of mental power. They were based on a planet orbiting two hundred and thirty-five million miles out from a red giant at the very centre of the galaxy.

The galaxy being called Pangloss is likely a reference to the character of Dr Peter Pangloss from the play The Heir At Law.
