Nuclear power

Nuclear power used controlled nuclear reactions, or nuclear fission, to heat water into steam, which was then used to generate electricity. (GAME: Shadows of the Vashta Nerada [+]Phil Ford, The Adventure Games (BBC Wales Interactive, 2010).) It was a form of energy, usually produced in nuclear power plants. According to the Second Doctor, to obtain nuclear power, one had to split the atom; the principal element used for this was uranium. (COMIC: Atoms Infinite) Used nuclear fuel was extremely dangerous and had to be disposed of carefully. Many ships and submarines used nuclear power, as did some spacecraft. (GAME: Shadows of the Vashta Nerada [+]Phil Ford, The Adventure Games (BBC Wales Interactive, 2010).)

There were many benefits to nuclear power, but sometimes serious accidents could occur. (GAME: Shadows of the Vashta Nerada [+]Phil Ford, The Adventure Games (BBC Wales Interactive, 2010).) The Chernobyl disaster, for example, left an entire region uninhabitable. (COMIC: Black Destiny, AUDIO: Power Play)

A group of Silurians were revived by nuclear energy from the Wenley Moor nuclear research facility. (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

Aliens resembling the Dæmons came to Earth to warn of the danger of the Molags. They advised the shutdown of nuclear power generators, as the Molags fed on energy. (COMIC: Menace of the Molags)

In the early 21st century, Victoria Waterfield became involved in the protests against nuclear energy. At that time, she was reunited with the Doctor, by then in his sixth incarnation, and met his latest companion, Peri Brown. (AUDIO: Power Play)

Wanda Rothman and her team discovered vodium, which she believed could be used as a source of low-waste nuclear energy. In 2010 she was at a conference to show off the vodium. During the demonstration she accidentally activated it, which caused it to produce micro-wormholes. These wormholes started pulling in people from the hotel, though she didn't realise the connection. Once the Eighth Doctor revealed the truth, she helped him neutralise the vodium. (AUDIO: Situation Vacant)

The Tenth Doctor's absorbing 500 thousand rads of nuclear energy to save Wilfred Mott triggered his regeneration into the Eleventh Doctor. (TV: The End of Time)

Roz Forrester, a native of the 30th century, was unfamiliar as to how nuclear power worked. (PROSE: The Nuclear Option)

The Hyperions were a species that was a fusion of DNA, nuclear energy and hyper-intelligence. (COMIC: Terrorformer)
