Monsters from Outer Space was a science fiction book read by Ian Chesterton while in the TARDIS. He described it as "a bit far-fetched". (TV: The Chase) The book was written long after Ian's time, and so he struggled to understand the book due to his lack of knowledge of scientific concepts included in the book.
After the Doctor programmed the TARDIS conceptual geometry, aligned the telepathic circuits, and explained they needed to make themselves receptive to the cumulative forces of imagination, the book was altered to contain The First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki. The Doctor, Barbara and Ian, who had accidentally left Vicki in the Festival of Ghana, then materialised in the Land of Fiction where they met characters from the book, Julia Jett and her dog Bunny. After they left the Land, Ian found that the book no longer contained him and his fellow travellers. (PROSE: Journey Out of Terror)
