Mike Gatting was a cricketer who had signed a bat owned by the Fifth Doctor. When the Dark demanded the TARDIS, the Doctor somewhat facetiously offered this bat as an alternative prize because it was "worth a fair bit". (PROSE: Fear of the Dark)

In 1993, Mike Gatting participated in a charity cricket tournament in Tasmania. The Doctor and Tegan Jovanka met him and his wife at dinner, during which Gatting used his finger to make the wine glasses sing. (PROSE: Goth Opera)
