Menlove Ereward Stokes was an artist who initially lived in the 24th century, and owned an art gallery. He then met the Fourth Doctor, Romana and K9 Mark II while they were investigating a crime performed by Ogrons. (PROSE: The Romance of Crime)

After this occurred, Stokes was confronted by the Black Guardian, who promised to show him a civilization who truly appreciated his artwork. In return, he would help the Guardian capture the Doctor. When Stokes had fulfilled his mission, the Black Guardian transported him to the planet Dellah in the late 26th century. (PROSE: The Well-Mannered War)

Stokes became a celebrated avant-garde artist in the late 26th and early 27th centuries. He held the post of Professor of Applied Art at St. Oscar's University on Dellah until that institution's destruction in 2596. Stokes specialised in using odd materials for his creations. Stokes also hosted a popular weekly art transmission, Paint Along With Menlove. (PROSE: Oh No It Isn't!)

He was an acquaintance of Professor Bernice Summerfield. Bernice described his works with the dung of the Giant Dellahan Dung Beetle as "fascinating but smelly". (PROSE: Mean Streets) When she went on a trip, she lent him her bicycle, on the condition that he wouldn't use it for art. (PROSE: Dry Pilgrimage)
