Aeroplanes of the Luftwaffe bomb London during the Blitz. (TV: The Empty Child)

The Luftwaffe was the name for the German air force during the Second World War. Hermann Goering was the leader of the Luftwaffe. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Exodus) The Luftwaffe's main fighter jets were the Messerschmitts, Junkers 88s, Stukas and Dorniers. (PROSE: /Carpenter/Butterfly/Baronet)

History[edit | edit source]

In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the Luftwaffe bombed Guernica and Durango using incendiary bombs. (PROSE: History 101)

During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe fought against the British Royal Air Force (RAF) in what became known as the Battle of Britain, a battle for air dominance over the English Channel, principally during 1940. (AUDIO: Their Finest Hour, PROSE: /Carpenter/Butterfly/Baronet) The British had refused to make peace with Germany after the latter had occupied France earlier in the year (AUDIO: Human Conflict) leading to Germany's dictator Adolf Hitler ordering the Luftwaffe to attack the RAF's airfields, radar sites and the RAF themselves, (PROSE: Timewyrm: Exodus) with the intention being to cripple the British's efforts to repel a German attack by air and make Operation Sealion a reality. However, despite many casualties, (AUDIO: Their Finest Hour) the British repelled the Luftwaffe's attack, halting the Nazis 'lightning war'. (PROSE: /Carpenter/Butterfly/Baronet)

The Luftwaffe unable to win air dominance, the Nazis changed tactics. Instead of fighting the RAF directly, in 1941, the Luftwaffe bombed the United Kingdom's cities in an event known as the Blitz to destroy Britain's civilian morale, which was intended to incite them to surrender out of fear. (TV: The Empty Child) That too eventually failed. (TV: The Doctor Dances, PROSE: Exodus)

When conducting a second Blitz campaign in 1944, the Germans replaced the Luftwaffe with V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets. These too failed to demoralise the British. (PROSE: Illegal Alien)

A Dalek, under the guise of a British Army Ironside, destroyed a squad of Luftwaffe Stuka planes as they approached London. (TV: Victory of the Daleks)

The Luftwaffe were used to bombard Stalingrad in 1942 during the campaign there that was part of Operation Barbarossa. (PROSE: The Beast of Stalingrad)

Alternate timeline[edit | edit source]

In an alternate timeline in which Nazi Germany won World War II and eventually conquered Africa as a result of the Seventh Doctor and Ace accidentally leaving laser technology in Colditz Castle in October 1944, the Luftwaffe was sent in to quell the Mau Mau Uprising against Nazi rule in Kenya. They proceeded to carpet-bomb the tribal areas and wipe out most of the native population. (AUDIO: A Thousand Tiny Wings)

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In the real world, the Luftwaffe were part of the Wehrmacht. This, however, has not yet been explicitly stated within the DWU.
