London

London, sometimes known as London Town and formerly known as Londinium (TV: "The Slave Traders", The Wedding of River Song), was the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It was a prominent city on Earth and was invaded by aliens many times. With the help of the Doctor, the invasions were repelled. Organisations such as UNIT, Torchwood One, MI5, MI6 and the Department also assisted in the defence of the city.

Government

As the capital, London was the home to the British monarchy, who resided at Buckingham Palace. (TV: Aliens of London) The city would eventually be absorbed into Central City, of which the whole of southern England was a part. Geography

London was located in the south-east of England. North-west of London was Oxford and to the north-east was the county of Essex. South of London was Brighton, to the south-west was Southampton. (TV: Spyfall)

History

1st century

The name London came from the Latin name Londinium. The city was founded by the Roman Empire during their rule over the island, which they conquered in 43. During Boudica's revolt against the occupying Roman forces in 60, she burnt the Roman capital Camolundunum before her army marched to Londinium and slaughtered almost everyone in the city including the old, the weak and the infirm. Barbara Wright's casual mention of coming from Londinium during a visit to Rome in the year 64 led to her and Ian Chesterton being abducted and sold into slavery, as the recently conquered Britons were not then Roman citizens. (TV: "The Slave Traders")

10th century

In 966, the Eleventh Doctor accidentally took Amy Pond and Rory Williams to Wemba's Lea in London, having intended to bring them to a football match at Wembley Stadium in 1966. (COMIC: They Think It's All Over)

After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Harold Godwinson, under the alias Hereward the Wake, considered forging an alliance with Denmark to attack London. (PROSE: The Real Hereward)

In 1397, Dick Whittington became the Lord Mayor of London for the first of three times. (PROSE: Oh No It Isn't!)

In 1420, Whittington left office as Lord Mayor of London for the third and final time. (PROSE: Oh No It Isn't!)

In April 1483, the Fifth Doctor, Peri Brown and Erimem met Richard III, who had recently begun his reign as King of England. The Doctor skipped ahead to 1485, leaving Peri and Erimem to live through the next two years in England to catch up to him. They took up employment as serving wenches at a pub called "The Kingmaker". On 19 July 1553, Rani Chandra met Lady Grey on her ninth and final day in power. Matilda attempted to assassinate Jane, but Rani averted the murder. In 1561, the Eleventh Doctor and River Song encountered a group of Silents in London while travelling through rogue time corridors created by an Eternity Clock. The Silents had obtained a fragment of the Eternity Clock and were trying to use it in their experiments. After visiting several different points in London's timeline, the Doctor and River stole a time capsule from the Silents and used it to batter through a Dalek stronghold in 2106. In 1599, the Tenth Doctor took Martha Jones to the Globe Theatre in London to meet Shakespeare. While there, the Carrionites attempted to release their brethren but were stopped by Shakespeare himself. The Doctor also met Queen Elizabeth I for what appeared to be the first time from his perspective. Elizabeth, however, recognised the Doctor and ordered him killed. 17th century

In 1603, William Lethbridge-Stewart travelled to London with James VI of Scotland in preparation for the latter's coronation as James I of the United Kingdom. Their arrival at London was triumphant, marked by what the Eighth Doctor called "a glorious parade, a magnificent spectacle." (PROSE: The Dying Days)

On 29 June 1613, Francis Pearson set fire to the Globe Theatre in London on opening night for William Shakespeare's last play, Henry VIII. Pearson was later attacked and consumed by the Mimic, becoming the being later known as Persona. (PROSE: Managra)

In 1628, a plague ravaged London. (PROSE: The Roundheads)

In 1665, the first cases of what would become known as the Great Plague of London appeared on the city's outskirts. The disease became more widespread and fatal the following year, after a deadlier strain of the bacterium Yersinia pestis was engineered by a group of escaped Terileptil criminals.

In September 1666, the Great Fire of London started on Pudding Lane after the Fifth Doctor had an encounter with a group of escaped Terileptil criminals. The fire destroyed much of London but there were few deaths and it cleansed the city of the Bubonic plague. (TV: The Visitation) The First and Fourth Doctors also visited the city at the time. In June 1780, Lord James Gordon led a group of followers into the British House of Commons and held the leading politicians of the country hostage. For a week, the so-called Gordon Riots tore through London. Entire neighbourhoods were burnt down and every prison was razed. Innocent bystanders were hacked to bits and criminals ran rampant. In 1808, a fire swept through London's theatre district, burning down the Covent Garden Theatre. (PROSE: Double Falsehood)

1810s

In February 1814, the First Doctor, Steven Taylor and Vicki Pallister visited London during the last of the great frost fairs and witnessed the River Thames in its frozen state. On that occasion, they met the novelist Jane Austen. (AUDIO: Frostfire)

An incarnation of the Doctor took River Song to the same frost fair on her birthday. Stevie Wonder performed for them. Because of his blindness, he did not realise that he had travelled through time. (TV: A Good Man Goes to War)

The Twelfth Doctor and Bill Potts were also at the frost fair and helped free an alien sea creature from the Thames. (TV: Thin Ice)

On 17 October 1814, the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory visited London. Amy left the Doctor and Rory in a pub so that they could bond while she went sightseeing. Instead they decided to use the TARDIS to skip ahead a few hours, while Amy encountered an agent of the Silence and became caught in the London Beer Flood. (COMIC: The Doctor and the Nurse)

By 18 December 1845, it was common gossip that Charles Dickens had stolen the character of Mr Pickwick for his book, The Pickwick Papers, from his artist, Seymour. While in London on this date, Dickens found that even "tramps" had heard the tale. The Seventh Doctor, Roz Forrester and Chris Cwej also visited London on this date. (PROSE: The Death of Art)

1850s

The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations was held in London in 1851. It was based in a purpose-built venue called the Crystal Palace. The Fifth Doctor wanted to take Nyssa and Tegan Jovanka to the Exhibition as "a treat" in the wake of Adric's death, but instead ended up on the tarmac of Heathrow Airport in 1982. (TV: Time-Flight) The Eighth Doctor took his companions Charley Pollard and C'rizz to the Great Exhibition, shortly after their departure from the Divergent Universe. While there, Charley met and befriended the elderly Duke of Wellington. The Tenth Doctor arrived at this time, met again with his friend H. G. Wells and ran afoul of the Torchwood Institute. In March 1963, the TARDIS materialised in the junkyard at 76 Totter's Lane, owned by I.M. Foreman, in the Shoreditch area of London, disguised incongruously as a police box. While the First Doctor attempted repairs and worked out a plan for safely disposing of the Hand of Omega on Earth, his granddaughter Susan Foreman registered at the nearby Coal Hill School against his wishes. Boarding a bus, they contemplated how they would pick up their previous, "normal" lives again, having arrived two years after joining the First Doctor on his travels. With the TARDIS caught inside a time corridor, the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough arrived in London in 1984, where they encountered canisters of Movellan virus and duplicates of humans created by the Daleks. They travelled across the corridor to meet the Daleks and their creator Davros in the future. After witnessing a huge amount of bloodshed in the early days of the Dalek Civil War, Tegan departed from the TARDIS in this year. On the following night, the Nestene Consciousness began its final phase in conquering Earth for its pollutants. In 2008, the Judoon searched for a Plasmavore in the Royal Hope Hospital and transported it to the Moon using an H₂O scoop. The hospital was later returned. (TV: Smith and Jones)

Professor Lazarus created a machine which made him younger and also mutated him. He went on a rampage throughout Southwark, before he was stopped by the Tenth Doctor. (TV: The Lazarus Experiment)

In September, the 456 returned to Earth, and possessed every child on the planet to relay messages announcing their arrival in Thames House. The Mona Lisa was in the International Gallery in London, on loan from the Louvre. Due to her proximity to The Abomination, made from the same sentient paint as the Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa was brought to life. She returned to her painting when she was tricked into bringing a sketch of K9 to life, who shot at The Abomination. (TV: Mona Lisa's Revenge)

A fast-growing strain of Rakweed spread its spores across London, releasing spores that put everyone in the city into a coma so the Slitheen-Blathereen family could harvest the plant for profit. Mr Smith used a high-pitched frequency across London to kill the plants before they spread beyond London. Tree and Leef Slitheen-Blathereen, their stomachs filled to the brim with Rakweed, were also destroyed by this noise after they threatened Sarah Jane Smith. (TV: The Gift)

During Christmas 2009, Saxon, actually the Saxon Master, was resurrected on Earth, and used the Immortality Gate to convert every human being into a version of himself. The Time Lords, led by Rassilon, used the drumbeat within the Master's head and a White-Point Star to break through the time-lock and escape the Time War. They planned to erase all of creation in order to ascend to a higher form of existence. They crossed through the gate, arriving in the mansion of Joshua Naismith in London. They were defeated by the Tenth Doctor and the Master. (TV: The End of Time)

2010s

In 2010, the Tenth Doctor fought the Krillitanes in London. (PROSE: Code of the Krillitanes) In the same year, he and his companions Heather McCrimmon and Wolfgang Ryter fought the Bacothormeon in the city. (COMIC: The Genius Trap)

In December 2010, Jo Jones met Huxley and Iris Wildthyme in London. (AUDIO: Find and Replace)

In 2011, the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory fought the Virtuals in London. (COMIC: Sound Bytes)

Also in 2011, the Koggnossenti launched an invasion of London. They began emitting a signal which devolved the brains of all intelligent non-Koggnossenti life. For a few hours, London was transformed into a ghost town, with 98.2% of the population reduced to a primitive technology fearing state. The Tenth Doctor reversed the signal unto the Koggnossenti, forcing them to leave Earth. Those affected by the signal did not retain any memories of the invasion. (AUDIO: Technophobia)

On 27 July 2012, the 2012 Summer Olympics opened in London during a period of unseasonably cold weather in the city, caused by an Isolus pod draining all the nearby heat. The Tenth Doctor, his TARDIS and people inside the Olympic Stadium were all among those placed inside drawings made by Chloe Webber, aided by an Isolus to give the stranded Isolus a family. Digging up the pod, Rose threw it into the Olympic Flame to heat it up, resulting in the Isolus releasing those it had kidnapped. Due to an injured runner during the torch relay route, the Olympic Flame was lit at the opening ceremonies by the Doctor, who appeared on international television. The morale of the Games allowed the Isolus to fly home. Afterward, the Doctor and Rose attended a neighbourhood celebration in London. By this time, the Torchwood Institute seemed to have been relatively well-known, enough that the Battle of Canary Wharf of several years earlier was now known as the "Battle of Torchwood". Somewhere around the same time, the Eleventh Doctor and Amy met an athlete who was on the run from a Weeping Angel who was trying to steal the Olympic Flame in order to ruin the spirit of the Olympics, and ended up in the TARDIS. The Angel took the torch with the flame, but the Doctor destroyed the Angel with his screwdriver and received a gold medal for saving the Olympics. (TV: Good as Gold)

The West London ghettos were 'policed' by the District of London Metropolitan Militia, under the theocratic "Chief Protector" Graham Mackenzie; the City of London had become an independent city-state running a slavery economy, building Westwall across Hyde Park and preying on the ghettos for fresh slaves, and opening Tilsbury Docks for global trade in 2096. Late 21st century

An Ice Warrior damaged the controls of the Weather Control Unit in London's Weather Control Station, creating a dry environment to propagate the Ice Warriors' Seed Pods on Earth. Due to its cold climate and northern latitude, the Ice Warriors sent their Seed Pods here to create an atmosphere lethal to humans, but which the Ice Warriors could thrive in. The Second Doctor repaired the control unit and destroyed the pods with rain. (TV: The Seeds of Death)

Behind the scenes

Throughout seasons one to twenty-six, filming for Doctor Who took place primarily in London at the BBC Television Centre. This was largely a result of the BBC being based there. Due to the order of filming it was Ghost Light, not Survival, that was the last story filmed in BBC Television Centre. Any future work done there was irregular. With the reinvention of the series in 2005, production was handed over to BBC Wales and moved to Cardiff, the Welsh capital.

Though it's possible that a real world location doesn't exist in the same geographic space in the Doctor Who universe, such cases are few and far between. Thus, the map at right is probably a good indicator of the DWU location of London.

Other matters

In the ultimately unproduced 1993 film The Dark Dimension, London was to have been subjected to an alien invasion, brought forth by Prime Minister Oliver Hawkspur, by numerous species including the Daleks and the Cybermen.
