Worldbuilding[]

Species[]

  • Starll proclaims that losing limbs in battle is one of the highest honours for a Sontaran.

Relationships[]

  • Grizella offers Starll a bouquet and implies his feelings for her are reciprocated.

Notes[]

  • This episode has a mid-credits scene at the end, similar to TV: Village of the Angels.
    • The episode (and indeed, The Eternity Club as a whole) ends with a new guest arriving at the Club. When Bernice sees who it is, she reacts with dismay, though the listener does not find out who it is.
  • It is never confirmed for sure whether the Oldest is an alternate version of the Master, the Doctor or neither. The director, David O'Mahony, confirmed in Issue 189 of Vortex magazine that it was his intention to leave the listener uncertain.
    • He said: "Listening to the finale of episode eight of The Eternity Club, I was so proud that, even to the bitter end, the audience are never completely certain who is telling the truth about the Oldest's identity. Are they the victim of mistaken identity and protesting their innocence? Or are they incredibly good at concealing their true, evil and dastardly identity? In casting this role I wanted to make sure that I didn't make it obvious. The inference of who [the Oldest is] supposed to be (without giving anything away) could have led to casting someone of a certain age, a certain sex and a certain voice type (hint, rhymes with Jerek Dacobi) - but I actively wanted to cast against 'type'.
