Laughter and Tears Behind the Scenes was the eighth skit included amongst the interviews within the 1994 special VHS release More than 30 Years in the TARDIS. Like several others of the minisodes, it was a fourth-wall-breaking parody, with Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred acting as parodied versions of themselves rather than the Seventh Doctor and Ace; the monsters featured in the series were not presented as performers in costumes, but were still claimed to have co-starred with McCoy and Aldred in past TV stories.

Plot[]

Wandering around a dimly-lit, neon maze, Sylvester tries to find Sophie. He bumps into a demonic dog he fondly recognises as "Fifi from The Happiness Patrol", and then into the Destroyer, before he and Sophie come across a Haemovore. Although they initially appear unfriendly, Sylvester strikes up a conversation with the creature, trying to recall what story they filmed together, which Sophie remembers as The Curse of Fenric.

Story notes[]

  • This story is interrupted by a cliffhanger and shortened Doctor Who credits, which announce Laughter and Tears Behind the Scenes as the title of the second part (after the fashion of early serials where each instalment had its own title). As such, it is implied that the wider story of which these fragments are presented as being extracts from would have another title than Laughter and Tears Behind the Scenes. However, none is given either on-screen or in the chapters list.
