Kublai Khan

Kublai Khan, (TV: Marco Polo, etc.) also spelt Khubilai Khan (PROSE: Bunker Soldiers) or Kubla Khan, (PROSE: Iris Wildthyme y Señor Cientocinco contra Los Monstruos del Fiesta) was Great Khan, an emperor of the Mongols and the grandson of Genghis Khan. (TV: Marco Polo)

A member of the Yuan dynasty, he ruled over all of Asia in the second half of the 13th century, (PROSE: Marco Polo) including India and Cathay. (TV: "Mighty Kublai Khan")

Biography[]

Kublai Khan succeeded Mongke Khan as the Great Khan some time between 1251 and 1289. (PROSE: Bunker Soldiers)

In 1289, the First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Susan Foreman met Kublai Khan. During this adventure, Marco Polo tried to claim the Doctor's TARDIS for the Khan. In Peking, the Doctor lost the TARDIS to Kublai Khan in a game of backgammon, a game the Khan's wife claimed aggravated his gout. The Doctor made Polo aware that the war lord Tegana was working against the Khan, and Polo stopped Tegana from assassinating the Khan. (TV: Marco Polo)

Iris Wildthyme, Tom, and Panda met Kubla Khan in Xanadu. He gave Iris a hookah. (PROSE: Iris Wildthyme y Señor Cientocinco contra Los Monstruos del Fiesta)

Within the City of the Saved, Kublai Khan ruled a District in the Chinatowns. The capital of his District was Ta-Tu. Pu Yi worked as a gardener in his pleasure grounds. (PROSE: The Night is Long, and Dreams Are Legion)

Personality[]

When asked if Kublai Khan would be angry if the caravan were to be delayed, Marco Polo responded by saying "of course he will". His two great passions were hunting and falconry and his stables were said to house ten thousand white stallions. He also enjoyed gambling, but the Empress did not approve. He became quick friends with the First Doctor due to their shared old age and related afflictions. The Khan was displeased with Marco when he learnt that his reasons for taking the TARDIS were unjust and selfish, but he ultimately forgave him. (TV: Marco Polo)
