Kenneth Adam was the Director of Television at the British Broadcasting Corporation, appointed to that position after the broadcast of season 1 was underway. On 28 May 1964, he expressed an early concern to his Controller of Programmes for Television that it was dramatically "stupid" for the First Doctor and his companions to always "split up the way they do when danger threaten[ed]". He claimed that Doctor Who's survival depends upon increasing the discipline amongst its writers, because "even [his] 3½-year-old grand-daughter remarked on it" after the broadcast of "The Temple of Evil" a few days earlier.
