Jonathan Powell (born 25 April 1947[1]) was Controller of BBC One from 1987 to 1992. As Head of Drama and later Controller of BBC One, he was involved in the firing of Colin Baker. He also effectively cancelled Doctor Who by not re-commissioning the show in 1990, 1991 or 1992. Powell had chosen to allow cancellation because the show's future had been questionable following the hiatus of 1985 and could not bank on it remaining an asset to the BBC. He was saddened to do this and was pleased when the series finally returned in 2005.
He contributed to the documentaries Trials and Tribulations and The Last Chance Saloon.
