John Ryan was a British animator and cartoonist.
He created the character of Captain Pugwash, who appeared in comic stories, comic strips, illustrated children's books, annuals and ultimately several animated series.
The Captain Pugwash comic strips were a fixture of Radio Times from the 1950s onwards, and one, written and drawn by Ryan, featured one of the earliest known licensed crossovers between Doctor Who and another fiction franchise as the First Doctor landed on the deck of Pugwash's pirate ship, the Black Pig.
He also created the series Mary, Mungo and Midge, which was featured in Future Generations.
