John Horton was the visual effects designer for various Doctor Who television stories. In his time on Doctor Who, he was credited in a variety of ways, and was one of the few people during the original series to be called a "special effects designer" — which has ultimately proven to be the more correct name for his work.

Outside Doctor Who he worked on many of the seminal British programmes of his day, including The Goodies, Monty Python's Flying Circus, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Are You Being Served? and Ripping Yarns.
