John Canning was a TV Comic artist who worked on the Doctor Who comics through all four incarnations the comic covered. Canning also overlayed new artwork on resized reprints. The primary change to these older strips, usually those illustrated by Gerry Haylock, was that the Fourth Doctor's likeness replaced that of one of his previous incarnations. The first reprints of this sort were published in the Doctor Who Mighty Midget Comic and the Doctor Who Winter Special 1977.

During the run of TV Comic, Canning illustrated numerous strips including Tarzan, Charlies Angels, The Avengers and Cannon. While, for a time, the weekly comic opted to reprint 1960s-published US Star Trek strips, Canning illustrated an original, full-colour adventure in the Mighty TV Comic Annual, meaning he is one of the few comic strip artists to work on both franchises.
