Joan Bruderbakker was an actress. She married Charles Bruderbakker almost immediately after his first wife left him, becoming Claudia Bruderbakker's stepmother. Claudia considered her evil. Joan was immensely superficial and enjoyed the high life.
To maintain her appearance, she underwent the Skin Deep treatment. The implanted plastic brought her under the control of the Nestene Consciousness, which was allied with Walter J. Matheson. She was made to try to get her husband to hand over control of his business to Matheson. When he refused, she killed him so his signature could be faked and the transfer take place anyway.
