Jem was a ship's boy who helped Evelyn Smythe escape from the sinking ship. He knew of the "Ruby Islands", and talked about his father. He was beaten to death by Red Jasper, trying to extort information about treasure hidden somewhere on the islands. Jem's death greatly effected Evelyn. (AUDIO: Doctor Who and the Pirates)
